Not too heavy (I've played New Beats and they were too heavy for my tastes) Good "chick" sound Usable for both jazz and rock Right now I have the opportunity to buy used: 14" Sabian Paragon hats 14" Sabian Regular hats (from the early 80s before the term AA was used) 13" Zildjian K hats. I know the Ks are best for jazz, but the pair I'm looking at is more expensive than the other two. Which hi-hats should I get? Thanks! |

I have a pair of the pre-AA Sabian regular hats and recommend them as versatile. They are not light hats (in terms of weight) and I would not clean them if they have some patina as it mellows the sound and makes them usable for jazz settings. If they have been cleaned, they may be a bit too bright and loud for acoustic Jazz.

I think the Paragons would be right out. They're pretty heavy so they would be my last pick for jazz.
Of those three (and without hearing any of them, which is actually pretty important) I'd also have to pick the pre-AA Regular hats. They should be the most versatile and I think those early Sabian's are generally really nice cymbals. |

Thanks so much for both of your responses! I was going to go for the Paragons but now I won't. The quasi-AAs do have a bit of patina and will acquire much more if I buy them, so now I'm leaning toward those. You were both really helpful.

If you don't like New Beats, I've got no advice for you - ha ha.
Sorry. |

Granted they were those strange silver-colored new beats from a while ago, so that might have affected their weight.

Big band and smaller combo jazz? I think New Beats are up to that task. If I remember right, it was Louis Bellson who dreamed up the idea of putting a heavy bottom under a medium top. Buddy Rich played some pretty bright cymbals, too (I wanna say they were NBs), and Peter Erskine uses NBs (at least some of the time), so there's a pretty strong precedent for using them for jazz. As for rock, which you want to remain open to ... there probably isn't a more used pair out there. They're like the Supra's of hats.
I've had lots of hats from the big 3, including other Zildjians (Ks, Rocks, Quick Beats) and I just don't see a more versatile pair out there. I have more rides and crashes than I can use, but I only have one pair of hats, and yes, you guessed it - they're New Beats! If I wanted something a little bit on the lighter side, I wouldn't think twice about pulling the trigger on some K Custom Darks, though. If you want something lighter than NBs that'll sit well in a jazz setting, these could be it.

IMO For versatility New Beats will usually win. As for the ones you listed, If I were you I'd go with the Regulars.
Though I'm currently using HH Fusion Hats.

I bought the pre-AAs. I hope they'll be lighter than New Beats since the seller described them as having a medium-thin top and medium bottom. If they're not lighter, they'll be very similar to New Beats and I'll see if I like them. Thanks everyone for the advice!

You'll probably be real happy with them.
I was just kidding you before. The 3 you listed in your first post are all good hats. (You should have gotten New Beats - ha ha). |

Hope it works out for you. I note the pre-AAs are not light cymbals. But based on the New Beats I've played it seemed that at least the top cymbal of the pre-AAs seemed lighter and less harsh than that of the New Beats. Also, I've definitely played New Beats that sounded very different from each other- I suspect the weights have changed over the years.

They came in the mail today! They sound like a pair of hi-hats should. Not fancy but very versatile. They're not too heavy for me and are a lot darker than my old zbts which is a plus. Thanks everyone for the advice!
