Music and Culture

Fantastic, Ken ! what a great find. Thats huge nuggets of musical wisdom, disguised as a casually narrated anecdote.

Love that guy. Can you imagine if we actually lived like that here in the states regarding music? Our culture is so far removed from his second example!

No one could take a request! Something more to ponder!

Thanks Ken. Bobby McFerrin is a philosophical guy ... ♫Don't Worry Be Happy♫ ...

What he says is so true. I struggle for authenticity, not only in music but in every part of life. In the west it's so easy to build up a ton of filters that interfere with our ability to just let it all hang out. So many rules, so many people who are ready to dump sh1t on us from a great height for not measuring up to their standards.

Of late I have been getting interested integrating between my musical self and my regular self. To bring those things we drummers aim for in performance - efficient movement, relaxation, listening and attention, team focus, making good choices, creativity etc - to, say, work, socialising, cleaning the house, eating, brushing your teeth, posting on DW, teasing out ingrown hairs, whatever :) ... to live life well rather than just play music to the best of my ability.

Otherwise my "performances" are just affectation, the difference between keeping fit and holding in your stomach for a photo shoot.

I knew you'd like this one, Abe.

Pol, Bobby really breaks down the wall between audience and performer by making the audience a part of the presentation. He also goes into the audience, that's something he's been doing even before stage diving became popular.
