Can anyone tell me what the drum is mounted on the left. Not the rack tom, the other one! Thanks
 
cant completely tell .. but guess would be a snare or some sort of timbale/ really shallow high tuned tom

if the pic was a bit bigger or closer it'd be easier to see
 
I can't see very clearly, I guess it mounted with RIM mounts, so it's simply fixed to the mount.

I have a a small Yamaha snare drum that has a tom mount (with a hole) on it... this one is different, it's a standard snare drum for what I can tell... albeit a smaller one.

haha, but maybe he has a tom where the primary snare goes!! lol, you can't see behind the rack tom so could be haha
 
I emailed Sterling via his fan site and asked him about this and yes he is using three snares. One primary, one side and a picollo as shown in the picture. He also drums for B52S where he uses two snares. He sometimes takes the snares of so they sound like toms.
 
Looks like a mounted snare or a really shallow tom. Very nice finish however.
