Yamaha DTX Series

Was looking at the 400, 502, 700 and 900 series.

I was wondering if all modules can assign any voice to a certain zone?

I've seen videos of the 900 where a cowbell was added to the cross rim zone of the snare and a splash added to the crash bell zone. Is this available through all the series, as long as you have some piece with zones?

I have the 500 and I can do it. I also midi out to EZDrummer and custom assign voices - custom patches for different kits and etc.

All the DTX series modules have to the ability to assign multiple zone pads.

DTX400 module: 3-zone snare input so 3 different sound possibilities

DTX502 module: 3-zone snare (Snares On/Off), crash, ride and hi-hat inputs so 15 different sound possibilities

DTX700 module: 3-zone snare (Snares On/Off), toms 1-3, crash 1, crash 2, ride and 1 extra cymbal/tom inputs plus a 2 zone hi-hat with 6 zone options (closed top, edge, open top, edge, foot closed, foot splash) so 33 different sound possibilities

DTX900 module: 3-zone snare (Snares On/Off), toms 1-4, crash 1, crash 2, ride and 4 extra cymbal/tom inputs plus a 2 zone hi-hat with 6 zone options (closed top, edge, open top, edge, foot closed, foot splash) so 45 different sound possibilities

Now this does cover layering (DTX502, DTX700, DTX900) or pad expansion through the kick input and the tom inputs on the DTX502.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the replies.

Loved playing the drums in school and maybe 5 years after but then life started and got away from it. Rock Band a few years ago sparked the interest again and now reading what these E drums can do and sound like, Wow!

Not sure when but I will be getting some. Is there any announcements of newer Yamaha models coming out in the near future? Would hate to buy something in the next 6-12 months and then the latest and greatest comes out.

Watching videos of the DTX series on youtube, I'm wondering how everyone is going about recording their playing?

I know the video is either a dslr camera, camcorder, etc.

How are they recording the audio to make it sound so good? I'm assuming they are plugging the module right into the recording device, but could someone explain how they go about doing this.

I'm looking to do this when I get a set and want the best sound possible for playback.

You can either record directly into module and then place recording on usb stick or line out into a separate recorder, such as an olympus LS-10 or one of the other makes..

Dear DTX Specialist
Can I add a 2 zone ride cymbal to my DTX-400K? I have added 3 zone snare. So can I also add a 2 zone cymbal. If yes, which cymbal should I buy, and do I need a stereo wire.

Re: Yamaha DTX Series 2 zone ride cymbal

On DTX 400 can I replace my ride cymbal with a 2 zone ride cymbal? If so, which cymbal should I buy? Will I need a different wire?

I'm already adding the 3 zone snare.

thanks

Unfortunately the tom and cymbal inputs are only for single zone pads. But the ride does switch sounds through velocity, ride sound for soft to medium and bell for hard.

Dear DTX specialist
I recently upgraded from DTX400 to DTX550. After setting it up with all defaults, I’m experience terrible blend of volumes. Especially disappointing is the RHH135 HH. Closed HH sound is barely hear-able. So please could you help me with a few questions:

Is it normal that I should need to customize gains and volumes for the triggers on e-drums in order to sound right. Or should they sound good out of the box and perhaps something needs repair?
Will the changes I make in gain and volume for the #1 Oak set apply to all sets? Or will I have to customize every set one by one? I’ve raised the gain on the HH trigger (#8 if I recall correctly) and now I can hear it. And I’ve raised its volume to max 127. And I’ve lowered the volume of the toms to 80. I’m starting to hear a bit more balanced although overall volume is low even with unit turned to max and my Roland amp at ¾ volume. Should be louder.
Will the changes in volume and gain I’ve made to Oak set be there next time I turn it on? Or do I have to create a user set? I’m thinking not, because the default sets volume blend is unusable.
Also, I’m not hearing 3 zones on the HH, neither open nor closed. Are their different gains to adjust for each zone?
Are there other settings I should make?
I listen to demos on YOUTUBE and the DTX550 looks responsive, loud, and blended in volume well. Mine is not. And I feel like I have to beat it to make it respond. Frankly the DTX400 is easier and more responsive, presently, to play, but I have made some customizations to it.

This might merely be a matter of expectations. I’m expecting out of the box default settings would be best, but perhaps that is naive.
PS, I really like the quality of the DTX550 set, the 3 zone cymbals, the damper feature, the snare etc and believe it will be great.

Your advice is appreciated.
