Simon Phillips

For any Simon Phillips fan's out there, I've posted some pictures from two separate shows recently, one from a late Dec/2017 performance @ NYC Club Iridium, and the other being an early Feb/2018 show @ Havana Restaurant & Bar, New Hope, PA. Both events were in promotion of Simon's latest works titled Protocol 4, and feat. for live performances guitarist Greg Howe, Bassist Ernest Tibbs, and Otmaro Ruiz on keys.

Thanks for the post.

I wish Tama still made those tom-mount microphone brackets.

Inspired somehow by the Hendrix/Mitchell thread, Simon Phillips came to mind. Two of my favorite performances of his are both Jimi tunes. One was from a Los Lobotomys dvd I had, where Simon and the band play my favorite version of Freedom that Ive ever heard/seen, the double bass is a mutha. The other Simon stand out for me is a tribute to Jeff Porcaro record where Simon and co. play If 6 was 9. Another incredible stand out performance by an man who showed me what was possible years and years ago on vhs tape! (his warm up exercise going from singles, double, triple, quads, hard soft, slow and fast as a roll, difficult to tell which was which!) Now I want to go listen to both of those performance, its been years, wonder if Ill feel the same.

Hello folks,
I suppose this is a dream come true, talking about music with some of my heroes SIMON PHIILLIPS and BILL EVANS.
This was my first interview ever, done 30 minutes before their show....
These musicians are the best in every aspect.
Next week we will post the full interview with these two men.
This is a teaser (me asking and enjoying every second)
Cheers!

Hi Drummerworld

I found this clip of Veronique Sanson live at The Olympia (Paris, France) from 1976, it feature the presentation of the musicians... and here you go, a 19 years old Simon Phillips on drums... he looks so young ...and the kit, my God, the kit... :)

wow great and incredible find !
I didn't know Véronique Sanson was so charming back then ! She's just came back on stage a few weeks ago after years fighting disease.
Her way of singing can get on nerve if you're not used to, that's right ;-) - great artist though. With good songs.
Nice to see the young Simon Philips with her.

Hello again,
Here it is the interview I did with Simon Phillips and Bill Evans.
Topics treated: timing, playing live with click tracks, creativity on the road, fills and transitions...What do they value the most in a drummer?
The interview was 30 minutes before their show.
Bill Evans had to leave the interview to warm up his voice.
Simon said "I can stay longer..." and that was exciting.
Laughs and great answers from these greats
I hope you like it!

Thank you for posting this. It was really great to hear how these masters approach their art.

Simon's explanation of how to conceive & execute a fill opened my eyes to a new way of interpreting how & where to play a fill.

And for anyone who hasn't heard Vigilante, watch it here and do your self a favor and use headphones or decent speakers.

Simon Phillips was so influential to me as I was growing up. And, I've always played his drum sticks. My main sticks for years.

Saw Protocol in Chicago a couple of years ago. SO good! Simon has a style all his own. Great energy. Precise. Technical, yet extremely musical. Love him.

Hello everyone. I saw some videos in which Simon Phillips explains the general principles of tuning his drums, the choice of heads, etc. Do any of you know exactly the notes corresponding to each tom of its set? Is there a video or post where it is shown? I imagine that his tom tuning follows a very precise scale that is always reproduced without variations. Thank you.

My wife and I were in London for a week late last fall for an anniversary trip. I looked up shows at Ronnie Scott's the week before and was planning to go see anything just to say I'd been there. Imagine my surprise when I saw a 3-night stand by Protocol with Simon Phillips. Needless to say, I snapped us up some tickets right away and we went to the show our first night in town. It was AWESOME, even if I was jet lagged! Simon's playing is a true inspiration. IMG_8922.JPGIMG_8925.JPG

So this seems as good a place to ask this as anywhere, but does anyone know exactly what percussion instrument is used to make the metallic clang in “Let My Love ...”?

I told some of you I would post one of his songs from his 1988 CD Protocol. The name of this song is Protocol. I love Simon Phillips he was one of the first to really get me into double bass drumming. Ever since I heard him do double bass on Give Blood by Pete Townsend I was hooked.

ENJOY!

My favourite 2 songs from his album Protocol (1988) was Streetwise and Red Rocks.
