For a more recent drummer and funk sound, look for Adam Deitch. He's right at it...

"The Very Best Of Tower Of Power: The Warner Years". After that I'd recommend the 40th Anniversary DVD to hear what they've been up to lately, especially for the lead vocals of Larry Braggs! (a jerk, but easily the best singer they've had!)

Check out James Black.. He was Zigaboos Predecessor and one of the all time great New Orleans funk drummers plus he could play other styles.. He was before most of the guys mentioned here... Here's a link to the you tube audio documentary on him.. Here's part one of 12? parts I think... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyCMoiC1PY8

Check out the book The Breakbeat Bible. Very well set up to both teach you funk drumming and about funk drummers, it has little bios and transcriptions of all the famous licks as well as a 13 step method to dropping some sick nasty beats.

Not trying to hi-jack this thread...just curious why you say he's a jerk (I don't know one way or the other). I'm seeing them for the first time on June 1st and am super excited to see David Garibaldi in action.

I was watching 'What is Hip' earlier and that monster groove..amazing!! They cut back to Garibaldi and he looks like he's not really doing anything. :)

When The Stones played the Superbowl halftime show several years ago, the next day at work a guy said, what's wrong with their drummer, he plays kind of weird? I said, close your eyes and listen.

Since everybody mentioned Martin, Modelista, Moore, Purdie etc....already, It's worth mentioning Idris Muhammad, who, along with Purdie, played a lot of the classic Boogallo Jazz/Funk albums. John Blackwell, drummer for Prince, is a two-armed beast of chops! ?uestlove, of the Roots is fat n' sexy! Charles "Poogie" Bell, Jr. is great on Badu Live! Just to name a few! Enjoy digging!

I would add James Gadson to the list. He played a lot with Bill Withers and Dyke & the Blazers.

One of my favorites is probably more R&B slow groove guy, but he was influential in the disco sound for sure, the great Earl Young. http://www.earlyoungmusic.com/earl.html

He was the go-to guy for most if not all of The Sound of Philadelphia or aka Philadelphia International Records aka Philly Soul. Spinners catalog, The Main Ingredient, Blue Magic, O'Jays...

Rock Fan, it's not so much about drummers as it is records. Try:

Herbie Hancock - Headhunters, Thrust
Parliament - Mothership Connection
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
The Meters - Funkify Your Life compilation
James Brown - In The Jungle Groove
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions, Songs In The Key Of Life

Fuo, try Back to Oakland for Tower of Power.

What about CARTER BEAUFORD? He may not be in a funk band, but his beats are seriously funky.

If you're looking for that Ultra slick syncopated funk vibe, check out Jason Thomas' playing on Roy Hargrove's 2004: Strength The RH Factor (Verve). Homer Steinwess, Dap Kings' drummer, Is an all around great session player. Cornelius Johnson, of the Ohio Players, is one of the lesser mentioned, brilliant drummers of this genre. Destruments drummer, Adam Willis, is an up & coming contender in the funk/hip hop realm. Tony Allen's afrobeat grooves have influenced many funk players with his signature groove. There are so many good players, so i've tried to stay off the beaten track here.

Happy listening/playing!

+1,000,000 on James. Go listen to Dyke & the Blazers' "Let A Woman Be A Woman..." for a taste of what he does best. All you need is the first first verse, but you won't want to stop!

You might also recognize the opening riff... now you know where The Heavy came up with their hit single!

James Brown, early era - I did a review of a nice music book-and-CD related to this material in another thread, "The Funkmasters - The Great James Brown Rhythm Sections 1960-1973".

For another twist, check out the cover play-along section from MarloweDK's Playalong Site - one of my favorite YouTube bass players, he's got a lot of sweet funk examples to point you in the right direction.

Other funk masters to check out: Herman "Roscoe" Ernest III, John "Jabo" Starks (though he'll be thoroughly mentioned in the JB articles), Jim Payne, Jamal Thomas, Kenwood Dennard, James Black (Eddie Bo's "Hook And Sling"), Johnny Vidacovich to name a few.

Happy listening!

Josh Cohen (Breakestra), Ivan Khatchoyan (Cookin on 3 Burners), Raymond Weber (ex-Dumstaphunk) & Simon Allen (New Mastersounds) are some of the new(er) generation of drummers keepin' the FUNK alive.
Since Toddbishop was nice enough to list some excellent albums to listen to, It's worth adding Fresh by Sly and the Family Stone. Andy Newmark's playing on "In Time" is incredible!

I just came across this thread again, so sorry for replying after you saw them! Anyway, I may have been a little harsh in calling LB a jerk, but when I met them at the post show meet & greet, he was yelling at people for holding up the line and telling them to move along and just being a diva the entire time. Some of the others were really nice, in particular the guitarist, Emilio and the trumpet player. Garibaldi is a bit standoffish but still nice. Here's my pic from that show with him.

Yeah Garibaldi always seemed like a guy that didn't like to be bothered. Great list so far!

Stanton Moore is a personal favorite of mine, he's got a DVD called Groove Alchemy where he goes through the development of a lot of the James Brown funk stuff, and it's a wealth of great playing and information!

Edit: Oops, didn't notice the threadcromancy.

A couple of months ago I had caught this Stevie Wonder performance in Germany back in '74. Ollie E. Brown is his drummer for this show and DAMN, does he hold it down.
