Default Africa's greatest drummer?

A bold claim maybe, but Tony Allen has been hailed as such by many artists and music aficionados from all over the world. Personally, he's one of my very favourite drummers (and one of the coolest there's been). He's getting on a bit now but back in the '60s and '70s he was the innovator of a thing called 'afrobeat.'

Check this video out and make sure you wait long enough to hear the drum 'solo' at about 0:40':

Any thoughts?

I think Allen is great, but this is like calling Gadd the greatest drummer in the US. Most well known maybe, highly innovative, yes, but greatest?

It's not my quote, it's just one you'll hear quite often. He might not be the greatest, but I wouldn't doubt it either. He's probably the tastiest, funkiest, most subtle drummer to play my kind of music alongside Alan 'Reni' Wren and Nicky 'Topper Headon.'

Greatest? I'm not sure. Favorite? Easy: Mamady Keita. I had the pleasure of attending a couple workshops with him and it was truly inspiring.

No worries mate, hadn't seen Allen mentioned around here and thought he needed one. He thinks 'all these drummers play too loud' in regard to rock drummers and that all you need is a soft touch.

Nice. Those more traditional African drummers have such a good ear for melody.

How about this; Allen's the greatest African drummer in popular Western music? He recently did some stuff here in the UK.

Hehehe ... his words make him sound like an old fogey (which I guess he is) but his drumming is a wonderful advertisement for restraint. I love the way African drummers play sophisticated rhythms in a way that sounds simple and appealing.
