I`ve just bought marco minnemanns dvd "extreme drumming" and this guy is just incredible, his independece with the four of his limbs(two legs two feet)is really amazing...e.g. with the left hand he is playing something in 5/8 while he`s doing a tomb melody in 7/8 ...and than he adds crazy stuff with the feet.
Dave Weckel is also a great drummer and probably one of the most versatile, i also have his dvd "natural evolution" which i consider not so informative and helpful, but anyway dave is great.
Well there are so many extremely good drummers, it`s hard to pick some
Everyone is looking for his little space(kind of music, special patterns) where he is expert.
Danny Carey has also very nice drumming, but i`d say that thomas haake of meshuggah is playing far more difficult stuff, listening to meshuggah can really make you dizzy

Bobby Jarzombek has gotta have the fastest feet. To me he's faster than Joey Jordison.
Gerald Heyward makes the cleanest beats with the hi-hat.
Akira Jimbo is has amazing control over his limbs.
TONY ROYSTER JR. is jus all around amazing to me. I saw the clip of him when he was 12, and if he was that good wit complete control over his hands and feet, he has got to be the best drummer now. I think he's like 21 or somethin.

I am sure when the bass pedal was invented some drummers said "He's playing bass with his feet and snare with his hands! That's cheating!".

My point exactly... As long as it isn't like the dualist or something that "plays itself" I am all for it.

I guess I need to start by mentioning the one who inspired me to play drums:

Lars Ulrich, when I heard him in Master Of Puppets I was blown away by the drums... though after almost 8 years of drumming, the song isn't difficult, the drums are a GREAT support for the whole band in that song
Mike Portnoy, one of my personal heores...
Virgil Donati, another personal hero!!!
Marco Minnemann, such a great drummer, and I just saw him on a clinic recently
Steve Gadd, such a great influence!
Jeff Porcaro
Simon Phillips
Dennis Chambers
Carter Beauford
Akira Jimbo
Thomas Lang!!!

-Bill Bruford...killer style, eats odd times for breakfast, and uses hexagons, perhaps my alltime favorite

-Danny Carey...drums sound magik, and also uses hexagons

-Dale Crover... can you say Melvins! I recommend them live...

-Tim Alexander...I just love this guy, all of his work is so unique, his live solos with primus on their last tour was EPIC!

-Dave Weckle...Master plan is so cheesy and so GREAT, i love every second, hes not affraid to kick a*s!

-Gavin Harrison...Have you heard this guy? check out his DVD rythmic visions. light touch mixed with killer chops and power fills, rock!

-Jack DeJohnette...I have to admit, at my current age i'm still struggleing with the "comprehension" of jazz, i've have allways loved listened, but have never really got a chance to play it. anyways, this guy is just amazing and has really helped me out in jazz land. Check out the live DVD with pat matheny, dave holland, and herbie hancock....holly cow!

thats it 4 now, but there are many, many more...

Buddy Rich
Charly Antolini
Sheila E. (because she's hot)
John Bonham
Neil Peart.

But my absolute favorite is Louie Bellson. Man can he play. I love how he structures his solos. There was one were he did a nice roll on the snare. He started out loud and then played real soft but fast. It looked like he was hardly moving his wrist, just his fingers to control the sticks. I also like how he uses his base drums. Louie is my biggest inspiration.

oops, i forgot one....Dave Laing of The Joe Sullivan Big Band....(Joe Sullivan is my Father...)

this guy is prob one of the top ten jazz drummers in canada, but he doesnt play in very famous bands, in fact hes only in my dads band and a few others around here....if anyones going to the montreal jazz fest, theyre playin july 8th at 9 and 11 at night on one of the big outside stages. Ive discussed drumming many times with this guy and hes just amazing....also, im known as his roadie since i always get to the shows early and set up the drums for him so that i can have my fun...

Well, here goes mine... but as it was already said every drummer I see is an influence to me one way or another, but to keep it short:

I guess my top 3 would be:

- Dave Weckl
- Steve Gadd
- Carter Beauford (He may be not a top to a lot of people but I just love his sense of groove and the cymbal/hithat work, plus he had a very big influence on my playing, as also did the other two greats :) )

- Peter Erskine
- Steve Smith
- David Garibaldi
- Jojo Mayer
- John Bonham
- Simon Phillips
- ...

And I guess it's enough
