Default Fly Like an Eagle (Steve Miller Band)

Has anyone played this song. I've been asked to learn it for a gig in a couple of weeks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdfsZK1lF3E

This isolated drum recording is great, but leaves me a bit baffled about where to put all the ghost strokes. I can play the basic groove(s) but nowhere as cool and busy as the original.

Anyone had any experience with this one?

Play it the way Gordie plays it. A 16th note hi hat pattern.

That works. I play it much smoother that way, although it doesn't sound quite the same as the original. I guess the most important thing is the kick drum accents in the middle of the bar.

Love this groove!

In the verse, the right hand plays the usual 8th notes on the hi-hat, and the ghost notes are on the e's and ah's. The difficult part is playing the ghost notes before, and after, each 2 and 4, all with the left hand. It's difficult, but worth learning. In the chorus, the right hand plays the "and ah" of beat 2 on the ride. There's a lot of variation in the chorus part on the recording, but if you just played the two variations below, or even just one of them, you'd sound very legit.

Another great groove, played too fast, all the swing, funk, and soul just squeezed right out of it. Not Gordie's fault, he's just doing his job. The SMB were very lucky they got that one studio take.

My advise is anything you find on Jo Ph's YouTube channel (if you want to reference it later) should be recorded.

Jo Ph had a ton of content up on the last outing and they shut the channel down... back at it again, but don't expect it to last.

Surprised how much content is back, the time it takes to upload.

Yes its him. Lovely track. He's on all those mid 70's Miller recordings and its always just perfect drumming for the song.
