Buying FIRST drum set - 2 with the same price!

Hello.

I'm a total new starting drummer looking for drum sets.

Here are the drums I'm currently looking at:

Pulse Pro 5-Piece Drum Set with Cymbals

http://drums-percussion.musiciansfr...e-Pro-5Piece-Drum-Set-with-Cymbals?sku=444094

Pulse Pro 5-Piece Drum Set with Cymbals and Black Hardware
http://drums-percussion.musiciansfr...t-with-Cymbals-and-Black-Hardware-?sku=445369

Which would be a better deal? I know NOTHING about drums, and I'm just starting out. Reviewers say they have really bad directions.. will that be a problem?

Those drums are just right about in my budget, and I wish to get the better of the two.

Also, Why is this drum more cheaper than the ones on top?

Thanks~

For what are going to pay for those drums, which are given away daily on Craigslist, you could find a good used set on Craigslist or Ebay. Those are basically the bottom of the heap drums. I would not spend money on these drums.

p.s. I have a few of the Pulse cymbals that MF sent me as a free gift and they are terrible bordering on useless.

p.s.s. here is a quote from the MF rating section. we now know where his laundry is:

I got this set like 3 days before the holidays. Its ok but I put a sheet and pillow in the bass and it sounds great. I put shirts in both toms and the floor tom got a sweater and a shirt and it sounds cool. I got some SABIAN cymbals and they rock. I definately plan on replacing the tom heads ASAP. But other than a few customizations its great!!!!

craigslist.com

Let me say it this way: You could spend $350 on a super-crappy starter kit, like the ones you mentioned. OR, for just a bit more (or even the same price if you're lucky) you could get a used INTERMEDIATE drum set WITH cymbals! How awesome would that be?!

Since I'd like to help you out, what general area do you live in? I'll take a quick look on your local craigslist and scope out any good deals.

Thanks for the reply, guys.

I live in Chantilly, Virginia.

Dude, I live in the same area as you! How weird is that?

So what's your absolute maximum budget for drums and cymbals combined?

Because I found a couple good kits there:

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/msg/971770822.html - a black PDP 805 with three ZBTs (not the best cymbals, but a great intermediate set, the same one I have)

There are lots of beginner sets on the DC Area craigslist, the 805 is the only intermediate in an affordable price range. Keep your eyes out though!

That's pretty crazy - haha.

I don't think I'm able to pay the drum kit all at once. With Musicians friend I can at least get a payment plan. So I think I have no choice but to choose the two I've already listed.

Absolute budget was $400.

OK, but still DO NOT GET THE PULSE KITS. Pay for the drums or the cymbals, save up, then pay for whatever you didn't buy the first time. You'll thank yourself in the long run. Pretty much every beginning drummer starts out on a crappy kit like the Pulse's, and since you are smart enough to go to Drummerworld for advice, you get to skip that step and get a good kit in the first place!

Here we go! http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/msg/972955466.html $300 for a set of XS20s, which leaves you $100 to help you save up for used drums!

Or, if you don't mind driving to Beltsville, Maryland, I can let you in on a little secret: Atomic Music.

They have literally HUNDREDS of used drums, drumsets, cymbals, hardware, everything! And they are not paid on commission, so they are very nice employees. Since everything is used, there is no set price for anything. Tell them you want an intermediate kit and decent cymbals for $400, and they'll cover you.

I'm actually going on either Wednesday or Friday to check out their cymbals. It's an amazing place.

Well if you have to buy on credit why can't you afford just a little more than $400? I think what you have to remember here is that if you save a small amount more then you will be able to buy a decent kit that will last years and you'll forget all about whatever it was you were going to buy with that extra money. Drumming is quite an expensive hobby/occupation but if you spend now, trust me, you'll save much more in the long run.

I agree do not buy those Pulses or you will be very sorry. You asked for advice and your getting it, I know you dont have the cash on hand but there are other options, especially if your going with a payment plan. $400 over a year is something like $40 a month tops depending on financing. Are you telling me you cant do $60 a month?

Bestbuy has a great 0 interest for 18months financing offer right now and they have some PDP kits that will make that pulse look like a set of paper plates (which it is anyway). If you cant shop CL or E-bay I would either wait and save up the cash or find a way to increase my monthly payment. If you buy that Pulse or a Gammon or any other crappy kit like that do not say you were not warned. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I have some used Yamaha Rydeens that will go for $500 with a pro level cymbal. The drum kit is in great condition and sounds very nice. Since I live in NC, shipping wont even be that big of a deal. The cymbal is a Sabian AAX 14" Xplosion crash and it comes with a stand for it. If you also want hi hats, Ive got some Sabian B8 14" hats in bad condition, but still playable, that I could give you too. PM me if you are interested!

WOW thats nice of you, Pretty trusting to ship someone you don't know a complete drumset and trust that he is going to pay you $40 every month till it's paid off. Well I guess it's settled then, this Yamaha Raydeen with the cymbals for $500 is the way to go.

Here's a pdp kit (Drum Workshop entry level) from musicians friend for $229.99:

Yeah i couldn't believe it either the first time i saw it. If you're limited to musicians friend pay plan, get this one instead of that Pulse.

Meinl starter cymbal pack, hats and a crash, $99.95:

total: $420 from MF (with shipping)

Im considering the set Drumsword recomended. It has a throne included, so it's a good deal?

Haha, uh, pretty much all beginner sets come with a throne. Don't get that kit--pretty much everyone on this forum will endorse either saving up to buy an intermediate kit, or buying a midrange kit on ebay or craigslist.

The matching hardware pack won't be in stock for a 2-3 weeks. Can you find me other matching hardware?

Thanks a lot.
