Mark Walker is a drummer worth checking out. He is on the faculty a Berkelee and regularly performs with his own group, Oregon and Paquito D'Rivera. .His composition, Deep Six, on Oregon's 1000 Kilometers, was nominated for a Grammy.

Here he is performing another Grammy nominated track, 1000 Kilometers, from the same album

Mark also played with Michel Camilo, following in the footsteps of guys like Joel Rosenblatt and Dave Weckl. I consider Mark to be a highly underrated drummer. He is not a household name (not yet anyway), but if you see him play live, you immediately know that you are seeing and hearing one of the world's greatest drummers.

Rhythm of the Americas LIVE STREAMING MONDAY OCT. 1st 8pm

Grammy Award–winning drummer, composer, and Berklee professor Mark Walker presents a powerful and intoxicating blend of jazz improvisation with the rhythms and percussion of South America, the Caribbean, and North America. His new ensemble, the Rhythm of the Americas, is a virtual wall of rhythm, sound, and color, and features two percussionists, Hammond organ, piano, guitar, saxophone, bass, and drums. Walker formed this group to balance the two sides of music he’s been involved in for over two decades: the tradition and folklore of his work with Paquito D’Rivera, Caribbean Jazz Project, Andy Narell, Cesar Camargo Mariano and Michel Camilo, and the expansive world jazz styles of Lyle Mays, Oregon, and Ralph Towner. At the core of the group are two masters of percussion from Berklee: assistant professor Ernesto Diaz (from Colombia) and Berklee alumnus Marcus Santos (from Brazil). Together these three percussion virtuosos drive the ensemble with passion, groove, and fire. The trio itself has been featured in concert at PASIC, the international percussion convention. The group also features Berklee faculty members Alain Mallet (piano), Tim Miller (guitar), Aubrey Johnson (vocals), Dave Limina (Hammond organ), and Dan Ian Smith (woodwinds), and Berklee alumnus Andres Rotmistrovsky (electric bass). These masters of improvisation and leaders in their own right provide all the elements of an exciting and rewarding musical experience for all listeners.

Mark Walker "Chord Bible Belt" featuring LYLE MAYS

Chord Bible Belt Video

Drummer Mark Walker interprets an improvised piece by pianist/keyboardist/composer Lyle Mays.

The two-finger keyboard improvisation utilizes a new app currently being developed by Mays, which harmonizes from the top down, choosing voicings from a user-created data base, which in this case contained less than a dozen chords. Once a key is held down, the app ignores other key presses, so counterlines can be added without triggering chord-on-chord cacophony. The user also sets the Midi trigger range. Midi notes above or below that range are ignored.

This is not "smart" software. It doesn't attempt to compose. The key to using it is twofold. First design a cool data base of chord voicings, then practice with it, like any instrument, to learn what that data base can and can't do.

Walker recorded this first take at 8:45 am on October 12, 2012 at Coolidge Hill Studio in Natick, MA. For more information including scores and keyboard transcriptions, log on to www.markwalkerdrums.comChord Bible Belt
