As promised (a very while ago) I finally have some recordings with a Zoom-recorder. Friday I had some visitors at my house, Gert Breugelmans (builder of these incredible drums) and Servaas Steurbaut (drummer of the band Cloon) who wanted to check out my set of drums :-). Here's the youtube-link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyCrx...&feature=g-u-u Glad he plays the kit the same way like I do ... using a lot of cymbals :-D ! I have to say .. hearing the drums from a distance, they please me even more than playing them myself ! There are some more Zoom recordings on the way I think .. after some editing. So hang on ! Cheers and enjoy :-))) !!

Aaahh, finally... it has landed on Drummerworld :)
Hey man, this is much, much better than the previous uploads you did a while back. I like the sound of the kit a lot, it's much more in tune with itself, I would prefer a bit of a more open sound from all the drums, including the snare and especially the bass drum, I was expecting more from a 24" kick, more open and some deep low end punch. but of course it's all subjective to taste, as it stands, it's a very good souding kit... and still a gorgeous looking drums :) Thanks for sharing and keeping your promises :) |

Good stuff! I like Zoom recordings. They're not perfect, but they're a fairly reliable benchmark. One feature of zoom recordings is the pronounced roll off around 60Hz. I'm listening through my reference phones, & they pick up everything. Taking the Zoom capture + Youtube compression into account, I just know that the sound in the room was much bigger than we're picking up here. I can hear quite a bit of head sustain too, but that's not backed up by shell tone. I'm getting a nice full fundamental, but it's a fairly short note, & operating mainly in the lower registers. I believe this is partially a head choice, partially a room acoustic, partially a bearing edge, & mostly a tuning thing. For me, the whole kit could do with being tuned a bit higher. Especially cranking the reso heads a bit would introduce a lot more body to the sound. A higher tuning would also excite those shells a bit more. They're quite thick shells, & will respond better to input a bit further up the frequency range.
All in all, a lovely instrument of quality, but I do think it needs to dial into it's happy space, & that always takes a bit of time & lots of experimentation. She's not firing on full throttle yet, but that's cool, as it gives you lots to look forward to :) These instruments are a journey. |

Actually the drums sound realy wide open, as they are fitted with Ambassadors (toms). The shorter bass drum (14") makes it not that deep (fat) .. but it can be the recording quality as well (?). In the middle of our recordings, we actually decided to put some muffling into the bass drum making it sound a more shorter ... I don't know for sure it was on this recording or another. All in all I like the more open sound, but when you play the double pedal then .. there's a lot of mudd :-S. Secondly, I had to refit the 24" with a new batterhead. 2 days ago I played trough it. From the start it was clear that the PS3 coated needed some beater-protection. But as Gert said that it was not needed, I played for a while without it. The head was doomed to fail. Not only the head suffers ... my new Gibraltar beaters are suffering as well (???). Have you ever bended a beater ? OK ... I now will look into some stainless steel for replacing those. Further on the recordings ... room acoustics are far from perfect, but as it is a temporary place I don't feel like investing a lot of money into it. (in the future somewhere I will build myself a basement with perfect acoustics :-) ). Greatly thanks 4 the appreciation ;-).

About heads .. I probably gonna end up with Emperors instead of Ambassadors (now on the toms). But it is exiting to experiment with all different tunings ... its the best thing I like to do, changing heads. I'll check the reso's the other day :-) ! Actually the shells are remarkably thin ... they are as thin as ply-drumshells ! The overall sound .. hearing the kit from a distance .. pleases me a lot. Lots of low end (floor toms and bass) but those toms sing and ring beautiful just like the snare. I'm a happy man :-) !!
