Favorite snare tone?

Hey All,

I searched quick and didn't see a similar thread, so here goes.

I'm just wondering if you have any favorite recorded snare sounds, something that sticks out to you? For me I have just a couple.

First is the snare from Suck on This by Primus. I have no idea what type of snare but it sounds just amazing to me. John The Fisherman

Second is Message In A Bottle from The Police. Again, I don't know the technicalities but I sure love that sound. Message In A Bottle

What are some of yours?

I chose my first snare fron watching this show. Sounds way better if you actually have the DVD. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZethJwDlvMY

Still love it. Actually, just back to using it after playing mostly my hammered brass this last year.

I have others, but this is my only standard multi-ply maple snare and it's perfect.

This is nice, too:

For records:
Vinnie on Robben Ford's "Supernatural" album. Yummy. It's so good it's unnat..... ehm, well...... supernatural.

Flo's snare on the Once Was Not album by Cryptopsy is up there.
And Dave McGraw on The Harvest Floor by Cattle Decapitation, but I think it's either triggered or taken a ton of studio work.

For backbeat music, I think this is probably the one that stands out for me: https://youtu.be/TU64RQYLbtk

There's a whole different side of the coin for other styles of music, but since this is mostly about rock drumming, that's the one I'll go with.

I like too many types of sounds to pick a favourite, but two albums which immediately come to mind are For Your Own Special Sweetheart by Jawbox and Big Generator by Yes. Back In Black is also great of course, and if I could get my drums to sound like a Def Leopard album then that would be awesome too.

It so depends on the song or style for me. One sound will not do it. Old school needs to be fat. Some pop music needs to have more pop. Really just depends.

As a general rule I really like the sound of maple snare drums. The warmth, body and punch just rules! Kind of a general answer, but still!

"Digital Bath" by Deftones. The tone, the crack, the attack, the ghost notes. It gives me goose bumps every time I hear it....

I love the percussion in general from that album--perfect miking and the drum tuning is superb. Not surprised that Tama decided to cash in on an Abe Cunningham signature snare.

While not my favorite (I don't think I could pick just one) and certainly an acquired taste, I like the articulation and mellow sound of the Paiste 2002 bronze snare at a low tuning.

Pretty sure Danny Carey used it as well.
