The most common comment I get is my mouth being open and making grunting sounds to the to the rythem to the point they mute my vocal mic when not singing..which is most of the time..I have to really concentrate on not making these strange noises when I have to sing on a song..

I've gotten the "you look high" before. Not sure exactly how I reach this point in my playing, but when I watch videos or look at pictures I always have my head tilted to the side, eyebrows up, eyes half closed, and a goofy smile on my face. Not a pretty sight.

haha, recently, at the end of a song I have noticed my jaw being unnaturally pushed forward, so I think to myself not to do that in the next song. Then lo and behold by the end of the next song, there it is again, jutting out like some gormless buffoon, like I have no idea or any control over how it is happening.

It looks like you just got punched in the gut in slow motion. Poor Pol.

I hadn't noticed until about 3 months ago but I tend to move my jaw up and down when I'm playing like I'm chewing on invisible chewing gum with my back teeth. My girlfriend was kind enough to point this out and I'm I'm self conscious of it when I play.

If you make those faces too much your face will stay that way!

I'll never understand how you can not make a face when all your limbs are doing something rhythmic. I would have to practice freezing my face to do that.

Load up a perfectly good pair of shorts holy crap...what a gem! Way to go UT!

I also have the mad or frowning face while playing, but I normally look like that anyway. Every day someone says to me "there comes Mr. Happy", or "Mr. Smiley". There are a few photos of me trying to read my notes or song lyrics while playing, and I look crosseyed to boot. Quite the great look I have going for myself!

I had a gig last night and one of the odder comments was from a friend of mine (a photographer, actually) who said that she liked watching me play because I 'looked so happy' when I was playing. Like I was really into what I was doing.

That's quite a change from a few years ago when I was lucky if I came away from the set without my mouth wide open and a thousand yard stare.

After she'd said that she turned around and asked me what the drummer's name for the other band on the bill was - I had to laugh, it was hilarious. Get out there, play with people, make friends and strike up conversations! It's all part of the fun.

The weirdest faces I've ever seen came from Adam Woods of The Fixx.

They guy's tongue would hang out like a dog when he played live. It was so odd. Although he always managed to keep it check for the videos.

I used to look like I was staring at people with murderous intent. Then I consciously stopped looking in the direction of people and just looked angrily focused. Now I laugh a lot with my eyes semi closed and look like I'm some very intense hallucinogenic when things are melancholic. I think.

I used to look like I was getting a prostate exam while playing! It took my sister video taping a gig for me to realize it. I just looked miserable, and from then on I practiced and performed while smiling all the time, for lack of a better idea. Now I'm told I look like I'm relaxed and having a good time, but I'm sure I strain to play fast, and I can feel my eyebrows lift, and my chin stick out, during tough moments.

But I decided that I would not looked bored or negative. That's just bad for business!

This is my main collection of faces:

The Flycatcher (my main one these days)
The Groper
Bitter Lemon
I Need to Fart
No! Not the Dentist!

Abe Laborial seems to be doing the You Doity Rat

In an earlier posting Naigewron is doing Is It Really My Birthday??!! but the black and white shots betray his Viking heritage.

Dan's giving his cymbal a come hither look ...

It's an extension of the Flycatcher ... they have to open up more to catch bigger things than flies ... not to be confused with Biting a Huge Apple in the "kooky" frame of the animation, where the teeth are bared more (Naigewron has a great example in one of his B&Ws).

Also, master of the EPIC GOATEE! Some guys go for length, but Dave has gone for the maximum coverage while still technically being a goatee.

And of course, master of the groove. The man has some seriously insane skills.

If you're not smiling, looking angry or making a face whilst playing, you're a crap drummer. End of story.
Practice those faces guys, I have a face like a right idiot when I get going!

I think I'm usually blank or scowling. If it works for Neil Peart...

Though I'd much rather look like Rod Morgenstein behind a kit. He always looks happy while tearing it up!

A sure Drummerworld classic!

I think my bassist hosed it up just then. That face is usually reserved for something going wrong.

I know what you mean. Get a load of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us7yp6RqBaM

That kind of precision and discipline seems like another world to me :) I read DrumNinja's interview with DG just after seeing that clip ... - you can really see the same cerebral clarity and discipline in the way he thinks: http://thedrumninja.com/2010/08/davi...ldi-interview/

Matt Frenette of Loverboy always made great faces. As my buddy used to say, it always looked like he was surprised by the sound the drums made when he hit them.
