My choices would be either a Ludwig Black Beauty 5 x14 snare drum or if Wood is your preference a Noble and Cooley Classic SS maple 5 x 14.

The Black Beauty can do everything very well, wide tuning range, crispness and volume and sensitivity.

The Noble and Cooley has similar traits as the Black Beauty but it is warmer. I actually played one again at my local shop and was impressed again how versatile these drums are.
