Default How to paint your bass drum head.

I like black and white bold bass drum art. Here is my technique for painting cool heads. Even if you have no painting/drawing talent you can produce great results.

These are sweet. What kind of brush technique are you using to get that stamped look? I am also a fan of doing my own bass drum head artwork, I only have one as of right now. It's almost a year old though, I'm ready for something new. Definitely going Fiberskyn. Any tools of the trade you'd like to share would be sweet; if I had any I'd gladly share but I basically just sketched it on and was done with it. Here it is, along with another that was on my old kit when I sold it.

that tree is stunning! well done.

i just use a thin brush and paint as accurately as i can then i go over the lines with little blobs to give them texture.

that method is a classic graphic arts technique. i learned that in school.

i used to paint drums heads for side money before stickers became the norm. though its cleaner and overall better, i do prefer doing it the old fashion way.

i already have a light table to put the head on for tracing, but i'm looking for a opaque projector to project the image onto. then i do the tracing that way.

for those (like me) who doesn't have a computer program to create and print art, its another way of doing it.

Has anyone used white Kiwi shoe polish?

I use it all the time on paper for making art, I wonder if it will stick to the plastic heads.

try it on an old head topg. be sure, once it has dried, to bit and bend the head a bit to see if the polish cracks.

Sorry about all the first born children sacrificed to resurrect the thread...

I used this tutorial, however I changed it up a bit by painting on the INSIDE of the head. I will now mount lights inside my drums to back-light them. When the lights are off it'll look pretty plain, with just a hint of something poking through:

but when the lights are on...

ooh i like you now bretton - that is thinking outside the box. i would also put a strobe in there so that it flashes everytime you strike the beater. great job.

Considered the Strobe, and have one, with a 1/4" jack for a footswitch, so I tried connecting my Ddrum trigger to it, alas, it doesn't make it flash with every hit :( So I'm not sure how to make that happen.

Also, I'd have to find another of the same strobe light, 'cause I'm a two kicks kinda guy.

So for now, it'll be constantly on while we play our set, and we'll stick the strobe overhead and Mr. guitarist can trigger it with a foot switch when we get to the intense parts.

*edit* also, Thanks very much :)

Does anyone know of some person or company that can paint or create a sticker for the front of a bass drum?

Thanks,
