Default Happy 100th Birthday Viola Smith

100 years old and still going strong.

Here's a nice clip of her playing from 1939!

Happy Birthday indeed!

Until you posted this thread up, I had never heard of her. I have to say it's not my usual taste but I think in this day and age anybody who reaches 100 is worth celebrating!

I remember the 100th and the 101st birthdays my Great Aunt had a few years ago. To paraphrase Blade Runner she'd probably 'seen things you people wouldn't believe'.

Congratulations!

She seems like a fun lady. Zildjian did a little article/interview with her. Here's the link...

Definitely an inspiration :)

A regrettably short interview but a fascinating bit of musical history there that I wasn't aware of.

Thanks Mary. Really, really interesting.

How about the kit? !

Looks like chrome rack but not a straight piece on it- hanging cymbals, modern hi hat stand, gong drums x2, concert toms with wood hoops, T handle tension rods, inlays around the bottom

and, I think. . . .

a rack of various sized coconut shells (she didnt play them).

Look again. Kick looks huge too. SHe also played trad grip with mallets of some sort.

I quit.

I dont think those were inlays, I think those were the tom suspension mounts. Also notice the pies she is playing are beat, or so it looks.

I really like that video.
It is so well produced and choreographed.
Happy Birthday Viola.
