Default Professional Music

Hey guys. For the past year or so I have really gotten into drums (mainly jazz/funk) and have been practicing a ton and joining school bands and stuff. Recently I have been thinking that making a career out of this is what I want to do.

Could you guys enlighten me on what it takes to succeed in music? I want to get a degree in jazz studies and maybe a double major with music education or maybe the studio/audio technical side of it. Any thoughts/comments/advice?

Set goals for yourself as far as where you want to be in a year, two years five years, ten years and so on. Then you have something to aim for. Also, as in any career field, you should think in terms of upward mobility; the management and/or production side of the business (which you may be already). The music business has really changed over the last ten years so you need to have defined but flexible goals. You might think about some business classes as well because the the world business is always bigger than the word music.
