Default 1980's Tama wraps?

Am trying to get together a kit of Tama Superstars or other '...stars' from the 80's. I see some nice individual toms on used websites, but often in wraps which I don't really like.
I'd like to re-wrap or stain wood underneath.
Does anybody know the integrity of those Tama wraps? in the 1980's did Tama glue the wrap all around (and thus a bugger to remove) or only glued in the one seam? Thx.

The first year superstars were introduced, they were wraps, but shortly thereafter, the 9600 series with 4 ply 6mm all birch shells, were lacquer only. The 80's 6 ply,9mm all birch shells wer also lacquer finished only.

The 70-s 80's Imperialstars were 9 ply mahogany and all of the drums in that series were wrapped, with glue being applied all around the shells.Stuart Copeland,Liberty DeVito and others used them, and they are great drums, albeit second in the Tama line.

I have superstars in the 9600 series, from 77,and I wanted originally to be buried with them, but later decided on cremation, and will give them one day to a talented younger player, who deserves a superior instrument. They are that good, and relativly inexpensive.Even if you get the extra series(long)mounted toms, they can sucessfully be cut down, and sound great, but you will ruin the collectable value,if someday they actually have some.

The Swingstar series were wrapped,in the same way,and Royalstars were available both wraps and lacquer at different times. The later Artstar II and other series that were wrapped, all had fully glued shells.

Fiberstars were full glue wraps also. You can just google Tama Catalogs, and most of the vintage stuff with specs.are online.Hope this helps.

Steve B...MANY thanks. Wow, you're such a wealth of info.
Yes I've bought Superstar power toms, cherry wine, they were so cheap but sound so superb and are really well made. I wanted to pair a bass drum. I actually like the power tom sound, tuned high, so don't plan to cut them down.
Too bad about the glue all around. That makes for a way bigger effort.

Yes, the Tama Superstars were very well made and, in some markets, outsold their Yamaha competing counterparts because they were more affordable. Great drums and hope to have some soon!
