Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple Stock heads

Guys

What heads come stock on the Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple kits? Cant seem to find that info.. Im specifically interested in the top/batter heads. Are they coated or clear?

TIA

They are single-ply heads "Made by Evans" with the Gretsch logo on them. I can't tell clearly, but from the Gretsch website it looks like they are coated batter heads with clear resonant heads. One pic looks especially shiny, so they could be smooth white heads instead.

Either way, your best bet would be to budget in an extra $100 and completely rehead the kit with good quality heads. Save the logo heads if you ever decide to resell the kit.

I bought the kit last December, and they were single ply heads by Evans. The batter was coated, the reso was clear.
They work to an extent, but getting after market heads is definitely worth it, especially on the floor toms.
Here's my Catalina Maple with the stock heads on it. I failed to tune the 14" worth anything, but you get the picture.

Thanks for you input mike. What heads are you using now?
I have Evans G2 coated in my GC shopping cart, so thats what im thinkg about using. Just the batters. I'll prob leave the reso's stock for now.

Also, nice video. Do you have an updated video with your new heads? Love to compare the before/after on them.

I'm currently using Coated Emperors over Clear Ambassadors, but that's pretty much the same as Coated G2's over Clear G1's.
I don't have an updated solo video with the new heads, but this is a tracking video where I use the 12 and 16 toms. They just sound bigger with the after market heads.

Tried a number of combos and settled on G1 over clear ambs and the sound is so nice. Sustain, very little ring, low, low tuning possibilities (never tried high though) and the floors are just monstrous sounding.

I take it Gretsch must have changed the head set up when they made all the other changes to the Cat maple line.

When I got my Cats they came with a clear two ply over clear single ply on the toms. The kick had a clear head with sound control ring (similar to a PS3) on the batter and a black single ply Gretsch logo head on the reso. The snare head was nothing short of someones idea of a cheap joke. It looked like a thin piece of mylar with some white paint on it.

All heads were "Gretsch. Made by Evans" None of them were satisfactory enough for my purposes.

In my humble opinion, it won't make a pinch of difference whether they're coated or clear. On kits of this price point, you're unlikely to find quality heads used on any of them. If you've got the money to swap 'em out for a professional level head by Remo, Evans or Aquarian........do it.
