Default Top 10 drummers you've seen in the flesh?

I was thinking of some of the great players I'd seen live (and one or two I'd wish I'd seen)

In no particular order:

Neil Peart
Dennis Chambers
Billy Cobham
Jojo Mayer
Aaron Spears
Vinnie Colaiuta
Todd Suchermann
Gavin Harrison
Virgil Donati
Keith Carlock

Wish I'd seen Bonham and Buddy...

At 15 YO, at my first concert, there was some crazy looking skinny guy named Ginger Baker.

In the next few years, the stand out drummers I saw were John Bonham, Clive Bunker, Ian Paice, Billy Cobham, Carmine Appice, Cozy Powell, Stewart Copeland.

I got burned out with music for a long time and have not seen any of the current legends.

I can't think of anyone of note except Ron Thaler. Did a sweet clinic, then said hey come for signing after... And seriously like 50 people crowded his kit and three of us actually went to talk to him. Seriously, what are you going to learn from a kit? How to be shiney?

Oh I lie. Jordan Mancino. I saw him from the circle pit :D

There's a guy here probably no one knows, my old drum tutor Paul Russell, most in the pocket dude I ever knew.

But generally here in NZ no one ever comes, I think most people missed the memo that we have both electricity AND running water, and that we can in fact speak full sentences without grunting.

10 is too few to list the people who have completely blown me away but off the cuff I'll list these. In no particular order.........

Steve Gadd (countless times)
Buddy Rich (5 times)
Louie Bellison (3 times)
Art Blakey (twice)
Roy Haynes (twice)
Vinnie Colauita (few times)
Dave Weckl (several)
Steve Smith (countless times)
Jeff Tain Watts (several)
Jack DeJohnette (several)

Because I can't single these people out, I'm listing them since they also had a big impact on me after I saw them.... Joe LaBarbera, Herlin Riley, Bill Stewart, Brian Blade, Antonio Sanchez, Jeff Hamilton, Stanton Moore.

Never got to see these before they passed: Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Joe Morello, Max Roach

I've seen many others though.

Amazed at the players you northern hemisphere-ites get to see!

I've seen Keith Carlock but I didn't care for Steely Dan's sound in the awful acoustics of the Entertainment Centre, ditto Barrimore with Tull. They'd be amongst the best drummers I've seen but their performance gave me less pleasure than many lesser players.

Anyway, in no order ...

Terry Bozzio
Cozy Powell
Roger Taylor
Tony Smith
Colin Walcott
Don Moye
Soko Richardson
Warren Daly (local)
Bermuda

Locally:

Rob Hirst
Mark Kennedy
John Annas
Steve Hopes
Paul Hester
Various no name jazz and fusion drummers who were far better than their status

I've seen Phil Rudd and always been bemused by the admiration he gets - in the early days their yahooing and Angus Young's brilliance was what set them apart.

Phil was always rock solid with a good groove - and in that he was unexceptional amongst Sydney pub rock drummers ... Rob Hirst of Midnight Oil, Gary Young from Jo Jo Zep, Kerry Jacobson of Dragon, Johnny Dick from The Aztecs, Steve Prestwich from Cold Chisel, and Doug Falconer from Hunters & Collectors etc etc.

With venues like Yoshis and the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in the neighborhood I've been fortunate to hear and see some favorite folks closer up and without having to listen to a big PA in a hockey rink. Vinnie, Dennis, Weckl, Virgil Donati, Toss Panos, Adam Dietch, Bill Stewart, Thomas Pridgen, Jeff Hamilton, Gene Washington, oh. Have to stop at ten.

Once I got going, I found it hard to limit myself to just 10, but here's a reasonably fair list of favourites I've gotten to see in the flesh:

- Taylor Hawkins (with Foo Fighters)
- Max Weinberg (with Bruce Springsteen)
- Gavin Harrison (with Porcupine Tree)
- Dominic Howard (with Muse)
- Nicko McBrain (with Iron Maiden)
- Mario Duplantier (with Gojira)
- Simon Phillips (with Toto)
- Mike Mangini (with Dream Theater and in clinics)
- Chad Szeliga (with Black Label Society)
- Vinnie Colaiuta (with Sting)

Thats a very tough question so I'l just list some of the more legendary ones and not i any particular order. Some of then had a profound effect on my playing in both musicality and attitude.

Joe Morello.................just a beautiful guy,and an amazing drummer and taught me Mohler

Buddy Rich.................a master of how to drive a band....of any size or genre

Gene Krupa.................the showman groove drummer who put us on the map

Richie Hayward............as someone once said,a groove that could pull a bus

Dino Danelli..................actually one of the first jazz trained drummers to play rock and a great showman

Ringo...........................WWRD and to this day

Carmine Appice............In my mind,in 1966/67..he invented heavy rock playing

John Bonham...............took Appices,Morellos,Papa Joes,and Rich/Bellson flag,and ran with it

Elvin Jones..................look up the word intensity, and his picture is there

Mitch Mitchel...............first fusion drummer in my mind, creative , fluid and underated.Being able to hold it togther with Hendrix must have been like getting cats to march in a parade.

great breakdown Steve ....love it

Bonham always reminded me a lot of a mix of Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Al Jackson, and Charles Connor

mix all of them in a blender and throw in some huge drums and you have John Henry Bonham

I'll pick the ten most impressive:

1. Terry Bozzio- clinic in a small club in Virgnia. His dressing room was the bathroom. He authographed my Bozzio, Levin, Stevens CD. His clinic was incredible.
2. Bill Bruford- sat so close to his kit at an Earthworks gig that he asked me if the cymbals were going to hurt my ears.
3. Neil Peart- many times in concert with Rush.
4. Danny Carey- couple times with Tool.
5. Mike Mangini- another clinic. He had a bizarre sense of humor and reminded me very much of Jerry Lewis.
6. Billy Cobham- saw him on the Spectrum tour and going to see him again in January!
7. Mike Portnoy- not the fan I once was, but another jaw dropping drummer.
8. Mickey Hart- w/ Planet Drum and the Dead. I did a phone interview with him once. A very deep guy with an ridiculous level of knowledge.
9. Stewart Copeland- never saw the Police but I saw him with Oysterhead. Amazing.
10. Tim "Herb" Alexander- w/ Primus.

Im pretty young so I haven't seen a lot of the drummers Iv wished to but heres my list of ones Iv had the pleasure to share the stage with or seen live.
Cameron losch- Born of Osiris
Neil Peart- Rush
Jason Mcgerr- Death Cab For Cutie
Branden Morgan- Misery Signals
Sam Applebaum- Veil of Maya
Jordan Mancino- As I lay Dying
Nick Steinborn- The Wonder Years (pretty sure he was who was playing for them when i saw them)
Andrew Tkaczyk- For the Fallen Dream (He was the original drummer Im pretty sure who I think is better than the new one)
Dan Carle- After the Burial
Andrew McEnaney- Structures

Iv shared the stage with 5 of the bands on this list and even though I earned no $ I still loved the experience. This was with a metal band I was in as you could have guessed and in our area its almost impossible to make money because of presales to just play etc... one of the reason I started getting into other genres more lol.

Derek Roddy at this year's London Drum Show. A truly exceptional performer and musician, and a very friendly and approachable man as well.

K.J. Sawka at last year's LDS. His set blew me away. His use of triggers and live sound manipulation is extraordinary, and his playing is excellent as well.

Eloy Casagrande with Sepultura at this year's Bloodstock Open Air festival. I'm not really that aware of their material but this was one of the most amazing drumming performances I've ever seen. So much power and speed in the same place, with a quintessentially latin groove. Fantastic.

Dave Lombardo with Slayer at Metalcamp in Slovenia last year. Just a standard festival slot but everything I love about his playing came across strongly even on a big stage from a distance.

Not sure if I can think of another six...four will do for now!
