Default Removing air hole covers

I have a early 2000's Tama Swingstar set. I'm beginning the process of removing the wraps and staining it. I've run into a snag with the air hole covers and removing them. I've read several resources saying to tap them out with a matching width socket and a hammer. That hasn't worked. They seem riveted to the drum.

Any ideas/advice on how to get them out?

Some pliers and a very steady hand will do it. Take your time, if you rush it you'll mar the inside of the shell.

FYI, that part is called a grommet. Googled "removing drum grommet" and found this vid, I can't listen to the audio at work but it looks informative.
