Default 4th of July Gigs

Good Morning everyone. I hope you all had a great 4th!

Did anyone have a gig that day? Could have been at a parade, or at a festival, or at a bar/nightclub, or even church?

I did...but I will tell about mine later.

I played a large private outdoor house party on Sat.
It was great. We played well.
We were liked and booked again for next year.
We also got two other gigs while there from guests.
The host gave us a big tip at the end when he paid us.

Yea, The host told me when he booked us that because of the economy he only had $400 in his budget to pay a band.
We took the gig for a low price. It was great to get the extra cash at the end when he tipped us.

I bet!
I remember spending so many 4th's playing at contests or in parades back in my drum corps days.

Nowadays my only gig, and it's a great one, is volunteering as the drummer for a church praise band. It's cool though, kind of like a Vegas act in the sense that you play the same venue every week. The sound is like a recording studio, and you are garunteed a large audience. lol

Seriously though..it's cool. Especially on holidays when we get to do different stuff.

I'll bet some drummers didnt realize, but if played correctly, America The beautiful can be one powerful song to play drums on.

I started in Drum Corps back in the early seventies.
It was fun to do the parades and competitions every year.

A recording studio nearby does an annual 4th of July bbq. and invites several bands to each play a set. We did this last year as well. With them providing all of the sound equipment as well as a house kit the choice is yours if you want to bring your own stuff, so it is pretty much plug and play.
We had a lot of fun.

Played a town 4th of July Fireworks festival. Nice sound system, thank God. Our system never would have cut it. Needed to cover a football field and a baseball diamond. 10,000.00 people easy. Great weather too.

No fourth gigs for me. I am playing a charity gig on Friday. Relay for life. Should be a good time.

I don't attend this church because it is too far away from me, but I get called occasionally to fill in for one of their drummers who is out or can't make it. I played with their dixieland jazz band Saturday July 3rd in a parade. About 11 of us were on a tralier pulled by a truck and we played "When the Saints Go Marching In". I got the task of improvising a drum cadence between iterations of the song, so that was fun. I literally played for an hour strait with no breaks. I was playing a 4 piece kit squeezed in and my ride cymbal was 1 inch away from the shoulde of the piano player. I only dropped 1 stick off the trailer and I thougnt it was gone, but some kind soul standing in the crowd saw that I dropped it, ran after it and tossed it back on the trailer.

And the next day Sunday I was asked to fill in for their drummer in their praise band who was out of vacation.

I never get paid cash, but I get all sorts of fringe benefits like FOOD. Everytime I play with this particular church I get feed VERY well, ranging anywhere from hot meals to all the coffee and donuts and breakfast pizzas I can scarf down. LOL And the music is always good and challenging.
