Default What's your Favorite fill from a song!?

Hey whats up Everyone!!! Whats your favorite fill from a song! like when you hear it you get chills everytime!!!..Mine would be the fill in baba o riley from the who..right after that part where he sings ''dont close your eyes, its just teenage wasteland" or something like that, then it busts out that fast awesome fill!! i love it!!!

A close second would have too be from jet, "look what youve done" right after the bridge, where the music stops and then theres singing, then he bust out that quick snare, rest, tom then w/e else he does...

So let me know whats your favorite fill off a song! and ill try too listen too it. And you never know it could become mine too:) peace!!

one that stands out as brilliant to me is Carter Beauford of Dave Matthews Band in the central park concert album. during the song what would you say, the song cuts out to just drums for a fill, and its a stunning combination of double bass mixed with snare and splash accents. such a good feel to it

Yeah, Aja..insane.

For less insane, but just awesome sounding, Steve Smith on Separate Ways

and its a bit cliche, but the breaks in Tom Sawyer, Neil Peart.

There's one huge drum fill by Tim Alexander on Primus song:
"Professor Nutbutter's House Of Treats" from the album Tales from the Punchbowls, if you know the song you know which one I'm talking about.

One the song F*** You (An ode to no one) by Jimmy Chamberlin on the album Melloncolie and infinite Sadness from the Smashing Pumpkins, at the end before the guitar solo................insane INSANE.

And I love all drum fills by Michael Giles on the song "In the Wake Of Poseidon" from King Crimson.

Also on The Dave Matthews Band Central Park Concert, at the end of the song Crush Carter starts some nice interraction between his hi hat and snare, and suddenly Bam, his hands try to destroy 2 of his toms and his snare in a series of Cobham style singles rolls with incredible power and musicality.

Go Carter !

The last three seconds of the drum solo that pretty much dominates the song Frankenstein by Edgar Winter Group. I like the way he just beats the crap out if the snare on the way out.

It's a bit long, but there's a great part from Neil Peart in 'Red Lenses' -- from Grace Under Pressure.

SOOOOOOOOOO many to choose...If I'm gonna say one I would say Danny Carey in "Crawl Away" (Undertow) off the top of my head...The part when it gets real soft then he does the crazy run between the toms and bass that starts soft then just erupts into a giant creshendo...It compliments Keenan's creshendo get up..get up..Get Up...GET UP...GET UP...WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!

What's up everyone? My first post on this site. Favorite fills: Bonham's triplet fills in 'Stairway' are incredible. Amazing how fast he was doing those. Man, there are so many. Here's one that might get me thrown off of this forum: Phil Collins' intro fill on 'In the Air Tonight'. I also love Buddy Rich's roll in the beginning of West Side Story from Rich At The Top.

Yeah, that one is very similar to the fill in Separate Ways by Journey (Steve Smith).

That is my fave fill of all time!

Here: I made a video of it from Led Zeppelin's "DVD", although it's not the exact fill he does.

Matt Cameron in "Rusty Cage"- by Soundgarden, it's so hard to get the opening fill spot on.
"Love Boat Captain"- by Pearl Jam, the roll on the first tom and goes down the toms, very cool.
Also "Black Hole Sun"- the guitar solo bit is mind-boggling. and my appreciation for Matt goes on...

YYZ,
Brad Wilk- "People Of The Sun" by RATM,
Plus all the Zeppelin songs.

You might need the DivX codec to watch it.

Pretty much any of the fills Vinnie plays coming in and out of the chorus on Sting's "Seven Days". It's a study on how someone can play utterly musical in a pop/rock context, and he does a GREAT job. Plus at the end where he takes a little mini-solo and manages to keep the 3 over 5 feel - dang slick.

Two were already mentioned in La Grange and Separate Ways.

Grand Funk Railroad - American Band. The whole opening before the "band" kicks in.

Maynard Ferguson - Birdland. The very end during the fade-out. A nice triplet thing. You've got to crank it up. I'm not entirely sure it's on CD version but it was on the cassette.

Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching (Live at Lupos). The live version gets a lot of play time in RI and Carter is just kicking the sh*t out of the band at the end. Smoking. I'll see if I can find this bootleg.

Frank Zappa - Pick Me, I'm Clean. Vinnie Colaiuta. Jesus. Quick and clean. Then there's the second one which is a complete change of style. That's Vinnie.

Journey - Mother, Father. Very similar to Separate Ways, but I still like it. There are some tasty, less-obvious fills in this tune as well.

Chuck Mangione - Hill Where the Lord Hides (Live at the Hollywood Bowl). James Bradley Jr does some nice stuff throughout the entire tune.

The Who - We Won't Get Fooled Again (Join Together). Basically a combo tour for Pete Townshend's White City release and The Who Tommy 20th reunion tour. You know where the fills are - if you don't shame on you.

I have yet to see him mentioned, but:

Mark Brzezicki's work on The Cult's "Love" is fantastic. Specifically the "round the kit" fill at the end of the the guitar solo on the track "Love" -- man, what a great fill from a great album.

For those that dont know his work, listen to that album -- also he was the drummer for Big Country and did some fantastic stuff on there as well.

All of Bonzo's killer triplets and rolls in Dazed and Confused... God thats a great drum song! Also the end of Lateralus, Danny just takes it all down... Ginger Baker's opening in White Room... The "Black Dog" fill (its about 1:38 into the song)... you know what, there's just so many, I wouldn't be able to do justice to them all!

I really enjoy all the fills from "Fire". Mitch Mitchell is just an outstanding drummer, in my opinion.
Another one I really like is the assortment of fills Keith Moon does in "Who are you". The fills are just so intense.

Hello Berhard

I agrere with the drummer but not with the fill.
Steve Gadd`s fill in: 5 brother`s with Dave Grusin is my favorit.
It`s not a tune you hear on the radio, but Stephen is playing great:-)

Man, there's so many...but here's a couple that stick in my head:

Limelight by Rush (the fill at the end of the song, and then that "rolling" tom fill)

(Don't You) Forget About Me by Simple Minds (the fill during the break down part, before it kicks back in)

Hot For Teacher by Van Halen (um, the whole song!)

Fool in the Rain by Led Zeppelin (the fill right before the guitar solo)

Rosanna by Toto (the fill right before the chorus part..."meet you all the way")

Won't Get Fooled Again....the original version. Although I do have to agree with mlehnertz on the Who's Join Together version...Simon Phillips!

Where Were You by Journey (right before the song kicks in, Steve Smith does a killer fill to come into the song)

Lovin, Touchin', Squeezin' by Journey (that tom tom fill right before the chorus...man, i love that sound of Ansley Dunbar's floor toms on that one!)

And if there are any Carmine Appice's fans out there...the Vanilla Fudge's live version of "Ticket To Ride", he does some sweet fills throughout the song (it's off "The Best of Vanilla Fudge Live...hard to find cd).

it may not be much but mine would have to be the fill that goes from the transition of the verse into the bridge of "sometimes you can't make it on your own" by U2. Larry Mullen Jr. is the man!

Any of the fills Billy Cobham does on the song "Birds of Fire" with Mahavishnu but particularly that rudimental sounding progression down the toms early in the song.
Totally insane!
