Go for it.
You only live once.
You've probably got some stuff you could sell off to help pay for it.

Not realistic, I know. Just trying to do my job as a forum enabler - ha ha.

I kinda' like that set too.

Beautiful and timeless indeed.

How about this one, does not scream Gretsch to me (more like DW or Sonor) but I like it :

If at first you don't succeed,.....and all that.

Some things actually do work out surprisingly well.

I think that kit would put a huge smile on the Mayor's face every time he walked in the room and saw it.

Beautiful. Saw that on Gretsch FB page. That's a stay at home kit right there. I can't imagine gigging that in a bar. That's my only beef with satin finishes. They look great but not real practical.

So is this a kit you are admiring from afar or are they actually in your house?

Mr Mayor, I think this might be of some interest to you :

https://davesdrumshop.com/products/g...in-walnut-used

It has been for sale for a while now, so if the sizes suit you I am fairly certain you could get a better deal.

3500$CAD = 2600$USD

Very reputable shop.

When I was a young dude, could actually grow hair on my head, I liked the crazy color--flashy looking kits.
But nowadays, I love the wood grain look. That's a great looking kit.

Looks like something DW would come up with, no Gretsch vibe at all.

Mr. Mayor, I was in Dave's yesterday evening and saw the kit Groov-E listed. It pretty darn close to what you have in your pic.
Although second hand, it is a VERY nice kit. Email, or better yet, phone up Dave, he's very good to deal with, and he ships to the U.S, Europe, etc.
Come on, live a little !

What do you mean by not practical? As in satin is not as dent resistant as a wrap?

Satin finishes are more susceptible to scratches and abrasions than either wraps or high gloss lacquer finishes. I don't about know about dents. Are you hitting them with a hammer or tossing them around? For example, Sonor's satin vintage onyx finish has two coats of lacquer on it. Their high gloss kits have five coats of same lacquer.

My old Tama Rockstar Custom kit has a glossy finish that's a huge magnet for nicks and dings, it's ridiculous. I guess it just depends on the lacquer and the number of coats.

I've always assumed that satin is less prone to nicks and dings because of this.

These are my 1972 Gretsch USA's, in a gloss finish. I think you guys are really splitting hairs about finish care and such. They're drums. You play 'em. Try to take care of them the best you can, but I think with even the slightest amount of care, you'll be able to keep them looking like new for a long time.

I know it's easy to freak out about taking care of your instrument and making sure it's protected at all times, but I would think that mentality would eventually lead you to not playing them as often as you should. I say, satin finish, gloss finish, wrap....it doesn't matter. Get the one you like, and make sure you're out there playing them! For as long as I've played, only once did I ever have a big heavy biker guy literally lose his balance and fall on top of my kit. I've never been in a situation where people are throwing things at the band, and in most instances, people are very cool when they get near the musicians.

Just have proper bags or cases when you transport and don't let your drunk friends help you out. You're drums will be fine. Today I had a crazy three-year-old run through my house and bang on all my drums. The mortified parent apologized so much it was embarrassing. I told her it's ok. That's what they're for.
