Default Technique for hitting only the top of hi hats fast?

I was practicing improvising an open drum solo and I came up with this idea of having my right hand play fast triplets on the top of the hi hat, so no accents. I quickly found that my technique got in the way and couldn’t execute it as fast as the solo called for it. Is there a certain technique to play fast on the top hi hat with only one hand, with consecutive notes (constant triplets, etc) thanks y’all!!

For me, those situations usually call for less wrist and more finger control over the stick. Often I'll switch to "french" grip as I find it helpful on the hats for this type of delicate stuff.

Play the first note in a mostly French grip, the second note American grip, and the third more German grip. Practice this very slowly in the beginning.

You know, we already have a perfectly good troll on this forum.

Just to get ahead of this, I'm going to post in every thread on the "technique" forum: "Just use moeller", regardless how irrelevant it might be to that thread or discussion.

Wasnt meant as trolling, more as a lighthearted joke, just to keep life a little bearable..

More on topic..

I am still not a fan of learning to play drums through Skype-lessons, but in this case, with 1 or 2 very specific issues, maybe that would not be a bad idea..

To see 1 minute how a certain movement works will have more effect than to read 100 replies about the subject..

If normal lessons are not available in your neighbourhood, then contact one of the guys here (Alex Sanguinetti for example) to guide you through this..

If you're not moellering your double pedals, you're doing it wrong. They should always be moellered to the fullest extent allowed by law.

Even if you say even and unaccented it depends on volume, tempo and feel.

Fingers, wrist, both or some sort of push-pull either with fingers or just back and forth with the wrist you'll find the right motion for your application.

Unless you're an extreme edge hitter, there shouldn't be much difference between accenting or not.

Technique is never a "one size fits all" thing.

You may also lower your hihats a little to allow for tip only playing

Depending on the volume I love using push pull . If you watch JoJo Mayer's technique or Ramon Montagner !

Push/Pull is a go to on the hats for me as well, but I have a harder time making the notes un-accented with this method than when I use just finger control. At certain speeds or on longer runs, push pull becomes almost a requirement and you have to accept a bit of accenting if you go that way.

Just being true to the OP!

You must first be able to play it clean at a slow tempo. Then bring it up to speed. You need to train your body to execute the motion. Once you have it, you’ll never loose it.

Let physics do the job for you :) let the stick bounce and control it with your fingers.

Try turning the clock back to when you were very young then mis-hear Jeff's Rosanna Shuffle as being one handed on the HH.

...don't get anything that has quality playback sound until you are mid way through high school...and you will have mastered one handed HH triplet playing and accelerated speeds.

...cant imaging when I first saw them live(only time I did with Jeff playing) and realized he was playing most of the ghost pattern on the snare and sheepishly realized my mistake and its subsequent skill building....only to be outdone a few years later when I forced myself to learn pieces of eight from Neil's MD insert...and played it at 45 rpm instead of 33.3...really considered hanging up the sticks for about 3 months in 1986-1987.
