I had an Export series set I used as a practice set a few years back. It wasn't as new as the one you have pictured, but it wasn't too bad. I knew it was a practice set, so I didn't spend anything on heads (used the stock heads). It was a good set for what I wanted to use it for. The tom mounts look better now than what I had.

Pearl Exports are very popular intermediate level drums. They are good for beginners and you can gig with them too. Are you buying new or used?

I'd keep looking. There are better sets for the same price as Exports.

I test drove the lacquer version of the 2014 Export at GC and found the kit and bundled 800 series to be very nice. Much nicer than the Exports of the past in fact.

That said, if I were going for a new intermediate kit, I'd grab a Yamaha Stage custom with a Yamaha 7 series hardware pack and an SR2 kit.

I'd also recommend checking out what's available used.

This, for sure. The Export series is a fine drum, and the hardware, as all Pearl hardware, is exceptional. But the drums themselves (I have not played the new series) tend to be very sterile-sounding to me, with very little personality. The Yamaha Stage Customs, by comparison, sound much more lively, and respond well to head variations. Plus, the Yamaha hardware packages are magnificent and will last you a lifetime of use.

In the intermediate range, I would play a Mapex Mars over an Export. The Stage Customs are also very good, but I would recommend saving a little more and get a Gretsch Catalina or a Pearl Vision. Just my 2.

The new Exports play quite bit like the mahogany Catalina's, and have the bonus of the added hardware. I think one of the biggest selling points of the Catalina is that you can get a maple shell bank for $999 MSRP. The downside of the Catalina is that you can usually find a used Renown for $800, which is a night and day difference.

Agree with the Vision, but might exceed the budget of the OP.

Speaking of which:

@OP... What's your budget. Are you Looking for Drums/Hardware/Cymbals, or just Drums/Hardware? Is buying used an option if it gets you a significantly better kit for less money?

Right. Mapex Mars are so much better than Exports. The new Mars series might be the best deal out there for new drums.
