I like the Reverends from Avenged Sevenfolds drumming a lot. Listen to Blinded in Chains. Also Brann Dailors intros to songs, and Joey Jordison. I think its Lamb of G-d that I heard a ringtone of with the sickest metal drumming ever.

i didnt read through everything to see if he was mentioned, but i vote Sean Reinhart. of course, he can play a lot more than "metal", but the most well known bands hes played in were metal bands. as far as newer/younger guys, i think Chris Pennie is one of the best. again, he can play much more than metal. to add to that, as far as death metal goes, Derek Roddy seems to be one of the best

I think that it depends on what kind of things that the metal drummer is good at. I evaluate him or she, by speed, technique and creativity.
Therefor here´s my folowing favourite metal drummer list: :P

Derek Roddy
Morgan Agren (this guy is completely cool, how he can mix jazz stuff with metal in odd time signatures)

Virgil Donati (he´s more rock than metal but very progressive)
Tomas Haake
Mike Portnoy
Chris Adler

Martin Lopez way ahead of Gene Hoglan???
You obviously haven't heard Gene play on the two Death albums 'Individual Thought Patterns' and 'Symbolic'.

Yes man great point! and also the drummer from Pestilence, main on their 'Spheres' alb.

I beg to differ when it comes to Richard, I WOULD say he's got better chops than those three, Death's 'Sound Of P..' and Control Denied's first alb and also his work with Iced Earth is brilliant, and he ain't ALL about speed, his fills and beats are very interesting and talented.

I've lately started to like the drummers for:

Bullet for My Valentine
It Dies Today
Still Remains
Darkest Hour (although his drums sound weird)
and God Forbid

so I'd like to add them to my list

Personally i think tool sucks their music is so boring to me they never play hard, the only songs i like are sober and stinkfist although their drummer is pretty good, i heard a drum solo he played, i think he should quit tool and join a better band

If you think that Tool doesnt play hard stuff, you have never tried to play along with any of it.

Since when is Tool metal? And since when is Danny Carey a metal drummer? Same goes for Mike Portnoy. They're prog, not metal.

Once again...check out Tomas Haake, Gene Hoglan, and Sean Reinert.

I'll add my vote for Danny Carey, to the degree that his stuff can be called metal.

Also, I seem to be the only one, so far, to say...

Bill Rieflin is pretty impressive (live, at least).

if u havent heard Michelson play, it is totally phenominal. Spiral Architect mixed jazz fusion with speed metal and achieved something almost incomprehensible

Martin Lopez, Nick Barker, Raymon Herrera, Portnoy, Paul Bostaph over Lombardo a thousand times! but still lombardo's work is great. and why not! Ulrich....I know many wont agree, but art's greatest attribute is to inspire, and I bet that many of us started listening to him before any of these great ol' and not so new ones. Therefore here we are today!

Dude you are insane. Bostaph is a good drummer but doesn't even come close to the feel and groove of Lombardo. Lombardo is slayer. They were not even close to the same band without him.

Bostaphs work on the new exodus is cool, but he is no match for Lombardo.

Listen to Testament's the Gathering.

i like the tool drummer but wouldnt go as far as to classify what he does as metal either. his talents dont need the title of being a metal drummer. as for mike portnoy, im not a dream theatre fan and ive only heard a few songs of thier but i think they deffinately do metal, the guy does way to many quads tho and i dont like his style.

as for the lombardo vs bostaph argument, why is anyone even going there.?

lombardo carried slayer from 81,82 till what? early 90s somewhere about. then bostaph sits in when slayer totally cannibalizes thier previous albums for, what seems, an indefinate amount of time for the 90s<i dont even know whos taking the reigns now>

its hard to gauge whos better, this also veers into master vs student, lombardo is the most influencial thrash drummer ever, been there since it began. bostaph is in a no-win situation

Well... I don't know if I can say who the best metal drummer is... maybe no one can... but in my opinion the BEST METAL DRUMMING is that of Tool... at least in the last 20 years...

This playing is so imaginative, challenging, fluid and beautiful... every part well tought out, perfectly excecuted... a drum sound with no selfishness to it... a sound perfectly meshed with the texture of the music... Danny Carey's drumming in Tool raised the ante in my opinion... both conceptually and technically about what metal drumming can be.

Since when did Tool start in 1986?

And secondly your knowledge of metal over the last 20 years couldn't be that broad if you think Tool has the BEST metal drumming, don't get me wrong though, he's a great drummer but the best in the last 20 years, I think not!

that's why in said, In my opinion.

I first heard of Tool in around 1994 or 95, not more... and after that I have not heard metal drumming I'd consider more brilliant or original...

More challenging, perhaps... faster, definitely... a more impressive sound... maybe too... but all those together to produce that effect again, I haven't.
