Default THE SPIRIT

This past Saturday, I attended a recital at the music school I teach at. Area musicians stopped by for food, fun and jamming for a diverse audience from the Chicagoland area. I got to play with some local blues guys, up-and-coming hotshots and a couple of very accomplished jazz cats.

The other two drum teachers didn't make it, as we were experiencing a true Chicago snow-blow mess. I played for 3 hours...improvisational jams, classic rock staples and jazz standards.

At one point, a young 20-something teacher grabbed a guitar. He is a co-worker and we've conversed but never played together. We started jamming with him and one of his students on guitar, a local cat on bass and another blues guy on guitar. The tune starting reaching that height of connection that can only be called MAGIC.

At one point, some of the brass students and teachers joined us and I found myself LOST in the moment. I was not playing...I was channeling. Truly.

The tune lasted about 30 minutes and I could feel tears running down my cheeks by the end. Every moment, every note was perfect. The crowd went absolutely nuts. We players just looked at each other and smiled and laughed. Something else took over during that jam. The Spirit of Music.

THAT's what it's all about.

Just wanted to share.

Peace, MT

Sorry, Arky and OP. It wasn't meant disrespectfully. Instead it was in jest.

I've had a few of those moments where things just 'worked' in the past. They are indeed magical - you can play things that you never thought you could. It's a lovely feeling.

I appreciate that testimony. I've experienced that a number of times and it is the thing that makes practice and playing worthwhile.

Kudos to you. That does not happen to me often, but it is cool when it does. Peace and goodwill.
