Default Make Shift Roto Tom?

Hey, I'm in need of your drumming wisdom :P

I've just bin thinkin about how much I want a roto tom!

And then I got to thinkin about alternatives to spending 300 and thought about using a 14" snare drum with only one, thin, clear and loosely tuned head on?

I don't keep my drums here so I'm not able to try it now, but I was just wondering if it's a good idea or just a fool's hope? :P

Thanks for any help!

You'll just get a timbale then. Roto-toms are called that because the tuning can be affected by turning the top head by hand. I have a pair in storage somewhere...

Aahhh ok, do you think I could get the same sort of sound from a timbale?

You can do, they are both shallow drums essentially, but timbales are usually a little smaller. Timbales sound a lot more like a highly-tuned snare with the snares off.
