Buddy Rich, Krupa, Mitch Mitchell, Bohnam and Travis Barker made me want to drum. Ringo made me want to practice so I didn't end up sounding like him.

Lol, I was half kidding. I knew I'd get someone's attention. But I was never a fan. I've gotten yelled at before for saying that.

Basically, it's the drummer of the most popular band at any given time that inspire the most kids to start playing. Don't go confusing it with "most influential" drummer!

For me, in my late 50's, I'd have to say Ringo, Moon, Bonham and Peart.

There is no right answer, but there is a wrong one.
If your answer doesn't include Neil Peart, you answered incorrectly.

Two tracks, more than anything.

1. Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zepplin
2. Run to the Hills - Iron Maiden

I remember the first time I heard Since I've Been Loving You. I was born in the late 80s so this was already one generation too old. But when I heard it I couldn't believe the drums, Plant's vocals, and Page's guitar.

You can't have wrong in the absence of right. Therefore, Peart can be neither correct or incorrect. He just is.

No there's a correct answer we can objectively measure. We need some math guru to help us. We need some index of popularity of drummer per changing population-remember the world population growth rate has been the largest between 1950-80s. So Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Ringo, etc all impacted growing populations and we need a measure of popularity in fair terms-so some Gregorian chant drummer may have been hugely popular to a small population though Ringo would have more impact on the absolute number of people however if normalized to population size the Gregorian chant drummer would win.
Hahahahahaha. Just pulling your leg. It wasn't a specific drummer as just the music of the times drummers-every garage band drummer was stealing licks from every about everyone. From R&B to the Tornados and Tellstar, Beachboys, Beatles, Stones, Buffalo Springfield, Grand Funk, all Jazz cats, etc, etc, etc, etc comes to mind.

That which is correct or incorrect is not Neil himself, but rather his inclusion or lack thereof in one's reply. To include him is correct, to exclude him is incorrect.
Regardless, it was meant to be taken light heartedly. I'm not actually condemning anyone LOL.

Surprised to not hear more people mention Keith Moon. Seems like he was one of the first to prove that drummers deserve the spotlight and should not be relegated to second-tier status. (At least in the rock context.) He also seemed to have a ton of fun, even if he was on his way to self-destruction.

But yeah objectively, in terms of pure numbers, the answer is probably Ringo. Their music has been around a loooong time. And as much as I respect what he did, I have to agree that he probably inspired people to give it a whack despite lacking technical skills.

For me personally it was Peart, Bonham, Stewart Copeland, and Phil Collins/Chester Thompson.

I don't think it's necessarily true that the answer is subjective based on your generation.

I don't think there has been an event comparable to "Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show" before or since. That was a perfect confluence of events that made for a singular moment that couldn't be repeated today.

TV ruled the land at the time. People stopped what they were doing to sit together in the living room and watch their favorite TV shows. Rock and roll was new and controversial and playing in a band became the single coolest thing you could do. Screaming girls! Money! Fame! There were no other distractions; no internet, no social media, no video games. Music drove the culture for decades.

So without hard data, if I had to guess, I'd say it's probably Ringo. The whole pop-culture/zeitgeist factor was at an all-time high for music when the Beatles broke. I'm not sure anyone else can compete.

Peart was by far my biggest influence(almost 50 years old), but I would be remiss not to include Van Halen, Bonham, Smith and Copeland in my formative drumming years. HUGE Rush fan in my teens, but as almost all others In my peer group I knew at the time, I went through a Zeppelin phase.

I have grown to appreciate Starr and Watts as Iíve matured, but man, in my teens they quite frankly bored me.

Haha no it's cool. I like dissecting arguments.

If non inclusion is the wrong answer, then can't we ALL be included as influential to an extent? Surely each one of us has played and brought enjoyment and influence to at least one other drummer at some point, be it a groove or lick or whatever.

I didn't know The Tornados were a British group-Telstar was a hugely popular song-with great driving drums. The British Invasion did start a lot of drummers but I think too much credit is given the Beatles. I think Beatlemania may have lit the match and Ringo deserves some credit but I think "Ringo" is a pat answer. If you were born after 1970 it's like who are the "Beatles"-Lennon quit Paul grew "Wings". Popular music , or that you are exposed, with driving drums gets everyones toes tapping. Is there a history of great drummers book talking about Chick Webb to the present and their contributions to the music of their era-like Kenny Clark and "the ride" , Krupa, Rich, Williams, Bonham, Purdie, etc.? I saw some videos talking about various ones-but nothing all together. I was born in 1955 and TBH Ringo was never a drummer that inspired me. The Beach boys had more influence and the Tornadoes, the Kingsmen, the Angels, and the Dovells are groups I remember more.

If people only knew who he was, Hal Blaine would have given the Rings a run for his money.

Roger Hawkins too. Keltner. Gordon.

Thats actually refreshing, being from that era and not being a Ringo die hard. Im not a Beatles fan, but grew to appreciate Ringo drumming. But I think even if I was born 20 years earlier, Id still have the same opinions.

Its a generational thing as to who inspired the individual, but as the OP asked for who inspired the most drummers, it would have to be Ringo and Charlie, by a mile. Me? It was Ringo to start, and Stewart Copeland to inspire me to be better and look into African and Latin styles.

Totally stereotypical and some may not believe it, but Ringo actually was the guy who got me craving to play drums. I became a Beatles freak in 3rd grade ('76) and was staring at pictures of his drums almost constantly. They just looked cool! A kid down the street had a kit and I had him show me how to play the intro to Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise), which was the first drumbeat I ever learned to play. I loved air drumming my way through that and A Day In The Life. Cool stuff.

Then on to Keith Moon and Animal, for obvious reasons, until at age 13 I got my first kit, which was 3 weeks after the release of Moving Pictures. Neil Peart instantly became my my favorite drummer and remained so for the rest of my teens (along with Stewart Copeland, Simon Phillips, Steve Gadd, and Rod Morgenstein).

Oddly, I was never terribly enamored with John Bonham or Charlie Watts, though I like Bonham a lot now. I still don't quite get Charlie Watts though... haha

Whaddaya gonna do?
