Default Mike Terrana

I never hear anyone on this forum talk about Mike. He is a beast. I've never seen anyone with the stick control he has. There are a hundred or more videos of him on YouTube. I posted one just to get you started. Enjoy. JW

His work with Tarja is impressive, plus he's funny as hell! Killer drummer all around, great footwork and hands.

His work with Yngwie was impressive also. Yngwie just isn't really on peoples radar though. Could be why he isn't as revered as he should be, he plays with the obscure.

Yeah,he is a beast and not your "run of the mill" drummer. Love watching and listening to his interpretation of classical music. The energy and precision he exudes is simply amazing.

Mike Terrana is one of the guys most drummers make fun of.

16ths on the kick and stick twirling guy, that is it.

I am not on board with this one.

I saw Mike Terrana with Tony McAlpine back like 91 or 92.

I've met him a few times.

But then he moved to Europe and fell off the radar for a while.

This one's cool too. A little bit of stick twirling, but it seems to be choreographed to fit in the performance. Perhaps stick twirling is Mikes quirk.

I visited i think at least 100 clinics in my life, most of them allready some time ago since they are not organized that much anymore, but the one from Mike Terrana has been the only one were i walked away after him playing 1 song..

The main reason for that was that he acted that much as a clown, that he just annoyed me too much to take anything that he maybe was going to tell serious..Which is bad in a way, since he has quite some technical skills and ofcourse he most likely can tell 1 or 2 things that can help every drummer with some things..

Taste can be also a big factor here, since if you like his jokes, maybe you will also have more sympathy for his playing..

But each time when i see him, i skip..

this is a great example of his ability to play to the music, yet maintain showmanship. BTW, nothing wrong with choreography.

I tend to agree. I've always thought "metal" drummers relied to much on machine gun bass drums, and constant downbeat, downbeat, downbeat, with the result sounding like you're listening to an over amped construction crew trying to be the first to get done. Terrana however mesmorizes. I especially love his playing classical music. As for stick twirling, I've never seen anyone as good AND never seen him drop a stick. He is just plain bad ass and a kick to watch.

This is true. I've heard many drummers make fun of him.

To an extent, he knows it too. It's why he left the United States and relocated to Northern Europe in the 90's, because he knew his style of drumming wasn't in with the times in the USA, but there was still an audience for his style in Europe, where he's been successful recording and touring with bands who are popular there, even if they have limited to no following outside of that geographical area.

Love him or hate him, he's stayed true to himself and found a way to make it work.

Wailin Smash in his final form. He is damn good though. Extremely entertaining to watch, which is why he gets hired. Crowds don't want to hear the latest polyrhythm you worked out. They like a machine gun of 16ths. It's exciting.
