Default Playing with ONLY the hi hat and bass drum

So I'm primarily a guitar player, and I want to play the hi hat and bass with my feet, since those limbs are available for me to use (if you're curious, I can't play with one hand, because one hand is tapping lead and the other is tapping bass). I am wondering how much different things you could do with just the hi hat (only using the foot pedal thing), and the bass kick.

Would it be sufficient for a super bare bones percussion part?

Thanks guys!

Welcome to the forum!

So you're playing a Chapman stick? Or a guitar in 2-handed style? Or a double neck instrument? Or whatever... ;-)

Sure, you can do a lot with your legs. But... to get the full benefit, you'd have to learn the very same techniques/patterns/interdependence stuff as 'normal' drummers would. Meaning it will be a lot of work!

Learn a number of bass drum variations. Also learn to keep a steady quarter/8th note pulse on the hihat. Or for even more variations, try to incorporate some hi-hat splash (open hihat). Splashes can be incorporated as open-close-open-close or vice versa, close-open-close-open. Not too easy but sounds very cool.

No I'm going to play 8 string, and drop it to bass guitar tuning (EBEADGBe), haha.

Ok so I know nothing about drumming, except what I see other people do, so to splash with an open hi hat, would you need to use sticks? Or can you do that with just feet?

I'll keep those patterns in mind, I don't have any drum gear right now, but it is definitely something I want to do.

Oh that thing is pretty cool! Maybe I'll look into that too.

No sticks, just feet!

Check out this video, esp. from 6.35 on. That's how to do the splash sounds (feet only). You'll also find a bunch of killer patterns with hihat/bass drum combo. Jojo has killer technique so don't get too shocked ;-)

Wow that adds a lot!

Sounds pretty close to real too. Not sure how I feel about that.

I play jazz on suday nite with piano, base and guitar and drums. No base drum due to no space. I use a snare and high hat and a ride cym. After a few weeks I really enjoy the setup. jz.

I was going to mention a stomp box http://www.bigfootstompbox.com and hats to make for a more compact setup but the Deluxe Foot Drum in the link Tony posted kills it.

Lugging around a whole bass drum would seem a more painful option than need be. The best option, of course, is to have a drummer do the hard work :)

As a guitarist you could get a Cajon with bass drum pedal that comes on a
flex cable and instead of a hihat use a foot cabasa...just a thought...I almost did it once.
