3 toms, most versatile sizes?

7x10, 8x12, 14x14 are great for lighter Rock and Pop. These drum sizes can be tuned on the low side and still have good punch. They won't get muddy in the mix like larger diameter deeper drums will.

I agree 10,12 and either a 14 or 16 FT. For the past few years I've liked the 14" over the 16" for my FT

IMHO, the best three tom setup is 10/13/16, depths of your choice. Peace and goodwill.

I love 2" increments

all my kits have tom configurations of 10", 12", 14" and two kits with 12", 14"

I use several three tom configurations, 10, 12, 16 or 12, 14, 16 or maybe even a 12, 13, 16. What's always a staple in the mix is a 16" by something floor tom, 16" x 16" or 16" x 14". The genre of the music usually specifies which drums I take to the gig.

Reading through I see a lot of 10-12 and then a 14 or 16 suggestions. I personally like smaller toms (8-14) anything bigger is too muddied in my opinion (will use 16 just needs to be high tuned). A lot of Pop/Rock (or Punk) drummers I see usually have a 10-12-14 or a 12-14-16 (one up two down). What kind of configuration are you going for? If it's a 2 up one down I'd go with 10-12-14, for 1 up two down 12-14-16.

For versatility, nothing beats 10, 12, 16 in my book. Punchy rack toms, and with a big enough floor tom to get that low end thunder when you need it. I used it for years, and it's a really nice tom setup.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm downsizing (from 10,12,14,16 rack toms) and rebuilding without a rack. I'll try 10 and12 mounted on bass drum, with the 16x14 on a cymbal floor stand.
