Sell Tama for DW?

I used to love Tama drums but their hardware continues to be problematic and I don't like the attitude of the company towards the buying public which makes thier existence possible. I also want to add that I bought this Tama kit after choosing it over a Yamaha Recording Custom drum kit which Dave Weckl used for a drum clinic and regreted it big time because Tama is just sloppy seconds when stacked up against the quality of Yamaha.

I always thought that Tama hardware was pretty solid. What i like about Tama is that the mid-level kits are cheap but you can make them sound good. DW also has great hardware.

I recently got a very nice offer for my Tama B/B that's a year and a half old... for 400$ less I had originally paid for... tax included ! When you add the fact that I got my eye on another DW... QUESTION : You would get rid of the Tama since you now have the opportunity to do so and buy the DW?...

I would leave things the way they are. You have two great sounding kits with you already.

Don't feel the pressure of being brand loyal either, don't be afraid to have some variety.

You see, that's why I love these forums, your opinions are what I needed, thanks !

After reading all of you, I think I will keep the Tama after all and will probably save up for the DW Jazz kit... or wait until I'm aboslutely sure I want to sell. This opportunity is sickening me though..., but it's best to be sure.

And what the hell, here's a picture of both... thanks again guys !

Damn! We could have traded.

Bummer. You know, up until that point I've played alot of different kits and made my sound with every brand, then I get these DW kits and the sound just wasn't happenin' for me. Tried all kinds of things, even another DW kit! I faithfully wore a DW baseball cap and had the obligatory DW sticker on the rear window of my truck, trying to appease the DW gods, all to no avail....

If you asked me before DW if I thought the brand was so dang important, I would've said absolutely not. Maybe I jinxed myself right there!

DW drums sound great when other people play them. Just not me. Maybe I don't sound great on any kind of kit, and cover it all up by playing fast and blurry!

I had a G2 left, used but what the hey... put it on the 14" and guess what... sounded very good !... Even a bit like the Tama... and no, I'm not trying to convince myself. A brand new kit need a bit of time before it « sets » and as many of you think, the original heads - even if they are Remo - need to be changed asap. I'm sure the DW will hit at least 500... just needs time. Will receive brand new set of GPlus this week. Can't wait to put them on ! But as for now, the Tama stays.

Keep both kits you have. And keep saving money. When you get enough money together, to buy a 3rd kit, do so. And buy something that's not a Tama or a DW. A vintage kit, perhaps. Or "something" unique, like a Peavey Radial Pro. Or "exotic", like a Kumu, or Spirit kit. Or a Ming carbon fiber kit.

Yes! This! +1....er, +20!

Dude you have two excellent kits....
Do what makes you happy of course...

But I personaly don't see the logic behind having two similar kits...
One half dozen or the other...

I would go for something VERY different like a small bop kit (Gretch) or a bonham kit
with a massive 26" kick - a very different config if you know what I mean.

How come nobody mentions Gretch? I love their offerings in the Jazz/Bop kit
configs - very classy....

Then see you would have a smaller more portable kit...
OR
Go to SJC, Truth or Shine drums and go custom all the way.....

To Spectron : Just never considered Gretsch, dunno why ! V'always heard terrific things about them. Also, at my local music store, they have a Bonham DW Ruby red with a 14" tom, 16 and 18" floors and a 26" bass drum... $2999.00. Major hhmmmmmms here!

To Bo : Just hate moving kits around, got one at home and one in the studio. Often have two gigs... so I'm considering a third but I know it's exageration.

To Techristian : my ears tell me I'm a heck of a lucky guy, and I can't wait 'til the store receives the Gplus I ordered so I can put them on my DW. But not being completely satisfied with what I have is probably human nature...

Guess what ! The music store called on Thursday and all of a sudden, they decided they wanted to get rid of a certain DW Classic Burst they had. It was a rental. Vintage look, Real good shape. Few scratches here and there but nothing big. Y2001 punched inside w/ black DW badges. 22" bass, 13" tom and 16" AND 18" floors. How much ?1499$ Oh yeah... how can I forget, it came with a DW 6 x 14 snare mat black 10&6 w/ black hardware. A deal? I believe so... tell me what you think !

I am going to replace all heads with Ambassadors top and bottom for that vintage sound... hesitated though between Emperor, Amb X and Ambassador. Not keen about coating... too warm and not enough punch. Comments ?

Pics to come for sure !

That sounds like a killer deal to me...although I'm confused: a snare, a drum rug, and black hardware?

If it's what you want...do it.

By « mat black » I meant satin black, here's a pic. Also the three toms... bass was being cleaned...

I feel like Tama broke the mold with the early 1980s Superstars/Imperialstars. These drums were just incredible and you don't really see them around much as quite few have led rough lives for some reason.

I simply decided to keep all, no sell... I feel better diversified this way. Got a heavy gig? I leave with the vintage and the 18", need a Tama sound, leave with the Tama... very happy this way.

...looks like you are two bass drums and a pair of snares away from owning four four piece kits.

Hahaha! This thread started a while ago... I finally sold the Tama. No regrets although it is a great drum especially with the Bubinga. Never know what life will bring y'a... maybe I'll have another one day. But for now, the DW's are perrrrfect. And oh! Almost forgot... I got myself a Dunnett stainless steel snare... OMG! A snare to have and to hold on to...
