Hey Everyone --
There's a new video series on BANG! The Drum School's blog focusing on Gadd ideas... "Lick #1" is a three beat triplet jazz pharase a la Elvin that Gadd used often in his funk playing....

Here's a video and PDF so you can learn the idea if you don't know it...

Have at it!!

Hey Everyone - Here's the 2nd of the "5 Killer Gadd Licks." Many of you on this forum will know this one already, but for those of you not that versed in "Gadd-isms," this is for you.

It's his classic 32nd note groove idea between the hi-hat, snare and bass drum that can be heard on Tom Scott's "Dirty Old Man."

Video and PDF included at the link: 5-killer-gadd-licks-two

Hope you enjoy.

Thanks, FF! Love your teaching since it uses both notation PDF and clear demos. I use some of your licks for my own gigging and parts of solos.

Too many lessons out there where the guy playing adds a lot of embellishment at the beginning or end of the lick, only confuses when you're trying to get it down.

Keep up the good work!

Hi --Sorry I only just saw your reply.... Thank You!!! I really appreciate your comment... today I had a moment of "no one is watching...why am I doing this... no one cares...." etc.....

So, seeing your note about digging it means a lot to me....especiallly after having that "moment."

Thanks again.

and PS.... I'm posting the third of the five killer gadd licks in a moment or two! :)

Here's the fourth of the five Gadd licks--the six stroke roll. The reason I think of it as a Gadd lick is because I first became aware of this pattern when I heard Steve play it in one of his solos.

I do believe the six stroke roll.... played the way the "pros" most frequently play it--as triplets--is an essential rudiment and bit of vocabulary.

If you don't have this piece of vocabulary in your tool box, you should check this out...

So, I hope you dig this lesson.... it's got a video, link here: Six Stroke Roll Video Lesson, and there is a PDF here: 6 stroke roll PDF

I hope you find this helpful!
