Hello,

I will be visiting New York for 6 days this week.
I am really excited. If you know any good used CD shops,
I would like to know where they are. Preferably, they carry not just
pop, rock, r&b, but jazz, world music, techno, electronica, post rock...

I will be staying in Manhattan, so hopefully not too far from there.
Do you know any?

Also, I would like to know venues that play Latin jazz, or other world music
influenced music.

Many thank you in advance!

Taka

SOBS is a good place for Latin jazz.

As far as CD, there are a couple of places over on 9th St at St. Mark's and down in the East Village on Bleecker also Academy Records in 18th St.http://www.academy-records.com/ It's pretty slim pickings these days

the best big band will be Tommy Igoe's band at Birdland: http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ . every friday night....but i believe you will want to get tickets in advance. you will see one of the baddest drummers on the planet at the top of his game & some of the most smokin' players in NYC / world playing big band, latin & funk classics.

I beg to differ. The best big band in my opinion would be the Vanguard Orchestra Monday Nights at the Village Vanguard. Smalls is cool, relatively cheap, they have live streaming video and audio archives on their site if you wanna check out what its all about. The Jazz Gallery, Cornelia Street Cafe, and The Stone are three of my favorites, and not too much in terms of cost, just really great music. You could also check out the more "name" places like The Vanguard, Birdland, The Blue Note, etc. but those clubs get pricey.

Agreed..and the music will be from an entirely original book as is also the case with the Mingus Big Band that shares alternate Mondays with Mingus Dynasty at Jazz Standard, which in addition serves great food. Igoe's band is a pleasure to listen to but if I want to hear some of those charts I would prefer to listen to recordings of the orginals.

I would also recommend the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, which performs at Birdland on Sunday nights. Tix are $30

Tommy Igoe's BBB does a monthly Latin night, so depending on when you are in NY, you could check the website to see if it is on. Tix are $20 for two sets.

both are pretty affordable for a big band. All have a drink minimum.
