I've had a few teachers over the years but the main one I had (for about 5-6 years) would teach me songs I wanted to learn 1 week and the next we'd learn something along the lines of Jazz or Latin based stuff, he really tried to broaden my mind back then and I did rebel a bit against it, foolishly, but I was 14-19 and just wanted to learn these sweet songs, haha. Like lot's of drummers I had problems adjusting to certain things, for example playing KK without playing RR, I would naturally just hit whatever I was riding twice when I double kicked (single pedal).
Now I'm a teacher (I only really teach at beginner levels though) and we just run through drums in general, how to hold the sticks and hit so it won't hurt your wrists, then we practice single, double strokes, and this can actually go on for quite a while, because I start teaching them 5 stroke rolls and 7 stroke rolls from the get go, which takes some time to wrap there heads around, we spend most of our time though on counting, this is something that my first drum teacher failed to teach me, so even now I find it hard to keep time when it get's really complicated.
I don't follow books/dvds etc.. my drum teacher didn't and it worked for me.
I hate teachers who follow the books AND neglect to adjust there teaching style to the students learning style, I had this problem with a few teachers.
