I think that Jazz is great, but I don't see it as a good or bad place to start, depending on how you define "start." If by start you mean learning to play fundimentals, I don't think you start with a genre. You start with rudimental study, stick control, and the classic solos. You learn the basics of the drum, then learn how to "spread" those rudiments and time signatures out over an ever larger growing landscape (set). It is a little like studying to be a doctor. . .first the general education, then specialization if desired. Jazz, rock, traditional rope drumming, orchestral, all are wonderful if that is what trips your trigger! But, you start with basics. As Vince Lombardi told his team during a half time rally, "Gentlemen, this is a football!"
