Does anyone have the dimensions or a blueprint to go by of Neil Peart's percussion rack circa 1980?
I would like to build one. It will look real good for the RUSH tribute project,

Are those ArtStars or SuperStars? I should know by the lug, but it's been years since i had my SuperStars, and I can't quite remember anymore.

Thanks for the reply Super Phil.

I have looked at a bunch of still photos and watched the video you mentioned. The thing is that before I commit to investing in the materials and putting something together, I need to be sure about how this can be done with some accuracy.
"Mistakes are made in those moments of indecision."
I figured that I am not the only drumming "Rush-Head" out there who has thought of this.

In regards to your question.....

They are Birch Tama Superstar SL Customs. I was fortunate to get these for two reasons and some extra $.

1.) This was the last kit of this series to be made because Tama, at the time, was switching stuff over to build the "Hyper-drive line".

2.) The only way I was going to get this kit the way I wanted it was through a 3-way phone conversation with a TAMA rep. and a dealer. I was specific with tom sizes (plys & dimensions) and my insistence on birch as a wood type, so with extra money and the timing of the end of this line, TAMA was willing to accommodate. The hard part was waiting for each drum to arrive over the span of 9 months. This was because they had re-calibrate the machines and make some different adjustments as was explained to me by the TAMA rep.

I chose all birch over maple simply because I personally love the sound. Big and resonate. By the by, this kit sounds awesome still and the snare has very little ring with no muffling. In fact as well, I believe that these drums are so easy to tune because of the attention to detail when they were built.

Tama has given me my money's worth.

Thanks again Phil.

Check out the Grace Under Pressure tour video, the whole thing is very well lit and you can see every detail of his kit. And for me that's the best Rush live video by far! Dig the rat-tail.

I have the Grace Under Pressure on an old video tape. Your right. I do remember it was well lit. I should get a copy of a digital one.

In regards to the Superstars. I spent above and beyond the list price due to my exact requests for modifications. I don't know if they brought back the Superstar line into production again. I know they discontinued them at the end of 2007. There is a caveat though. My concert toms are Yamaha but they are all birch as well. I kind of had to look elsewhere to augment my kit after a good chunk of my funds were depleting after paying for the main trap set. I got those through Steve Weiss Music in New York. They were reasonably priced. The fills match up nicely in tone so matching shell covering will come down the road.

I used to play (old kit) with a double bass set-up. I decided to switch to a double pedal (Iron Cobras) instead. The positive result was I could set this all up on the (18 inch high) 8' x 8' riser I built. A space saving decision.

Some great suggestions and questions except the "rat-tail". I cut and donated my ass length hair (2nd. growth) about 3 years ago. At my age, even though I still can grow it, it would look a little pathetic with the many strands of grey that have appeared more and more.
I'll be keeping it short...unless I come to be the understudy to Gandalf in the stage production of Lord of the Rings.

So I guess there is that.....
