I've been that close to Vinnie before at a clinic but never a show. Again, not likely, as I'm sure his pay scale is on a different level than the folks Robben usually brings out,

Despite facing various challenges on many fronts, looks like Vinnie's new https://www.livemusetv.com/ website will launch soon. I wish him the very best as this system will be a major breakthrough in the industry. Fan having direct access to materials provided directly by the artists... This is gonna be great... GO VINNIE GO!!!

That business stuff is very real for those who are in it and not just on the pure performer level. I can easily relate as mainly a teacher as well.

Vinnie did his work in a different time, he's been lucky and he's well set, but he understands that things are different now and speaks up. It's quite necessary.

Steve Vai tells that awesome Vinnie sight reading story about a Zappa session, I wonder if he's referring to this track? Anyone have any insights?

hey all,

maybe it's just me but it seems vinnie comes off more technical than musical. i personally prefer a good balance between both.

I'd challenge anyone to play this "simple beat" this well.

What I love about Vinnie is he can play the most mind blowingly technical, complicated parts and always makes them sound organic and musical...to my ears anyway. To me, best theres ever been for what I want from a drummer.

Oh yea Odd, so in the pocket with Faith. Also gets stupid in the pocket with Chaka, love that show, especially the behind the scenes jamming with Melvin on bass.

Yeah. He often plays busy, but it's usually not a hit everything hard and sound the same approach, the dynamics make it work.

Another difference for me is simple that he's always on. Fully present. Every hit has intention behind it. It could still be a simple beat like e.g. "If I ever loose my faith." Listen to him play it and the listen to someone else.

Just back from the Herbie show.

Much preferred this show to the last time I saw him. Everyone was playing safe then and Vinnie was holding back a loy. This time it was back to, although sober I hope, a real 70s fusion vibe and it's the first time I've felt Lionel really fit. Still, it's the afro harmony singing that does it and Herbie obviously loves the sounds. As a guitar player, I'll never really be sold. James had solid feel. Not much soloing, though.

Herbie does a lot of the same stuff, especially at shows like this, but it sounded really different this time.

For the drum nerdy stuff: Vinnie was playing his new signature snares, regular 6-piece Gretsch, but must have been a 20" bass drum. Ride far right again with X cymbal up on the right and one splash above the china. Slightly different from the vids so far. Mostly matched grip except for brushes and the funky stuff. Definetly Vinnie, but there seems to be more back to the roots and nod to Tony and Billy thing going on. Not overused, but certainly not shy with the double pedal.

Definetly nice to see him indoors again, pretty close up and in a venue that's really controlled. You couldn't even go in or out at all between songs.

Definitely a 22" kick. 10 lugs per side. Also check the backline company, they don't even have a smaller USA Custom kick:

Another great solo with implied metric modulation, I love it.

That's a cover of Michael Jackson's Black or White (Arranged by Hadrien Feraud & Nicki Gonzalez)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7BELE-3gMI

There's a chapter to explain that sort of implied metric modulation in my own book Time Manipulation, that's going to be out soon.
http://www.timemanipulation.com/en/

The guitarist in the previous video is Kamil Rustam who recently released a CD with Vinnie on most tracks. It seems to be a limited edition as a physical CD.
https://kamilrustam.bandcamp.com
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT8f7ErX42I

I also ordered a new Brian Eisenberg CD. There's a few videos here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__cB...spB6P4phlpMf9Q

I also ordered the Mili CD, that was mentioned in a previous post.

There's also a new Jing Chi CD (Supremo) that's quite interesting.
If you don't know, Jing Chi is a trio with Robben Ford, Jimmy Haslip and Vinnie C.

Also, I recently met Jimmy Haslip, who told me he has a new CD coming out soon, with Vinnie as well.
