50 year old luan shells. Hardware is junk for the most part. Lugs are usually OK on these drums but everything else falls apart. The strainer is a zoomatic copy and is almost certaily broken when you find these. I had a 1968 Super Deluxe outfit as a teenager. I bought a replacement kit a few years ago and had it rewrapped and replaced the hardware...because....the shells themselves sound fantastic! The 16 x 16 floor tom is one of my favorite drums of all time. It's not cost effective to rehab these drums but if you do you'll have a fabulous sounding kit. The Challenger kit pictured is the smaller sizes...20 x 14, 12 x 8 and 14x 14. These appear to be 1969 models. Prices are all over the lot for these but most kits are relatively inexpensive.

Luan is also referred to as Philippine Mahogany. You've probably seen that term.
Here's some intro. history on Pearl .... http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/japa...tart_page.html

You've probably played it multiple times. It's a very common wood in starter and budget kits, especially older stencils as Harry mentioned. It was a component of my first-run Stage Custom in 1998.
