Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break was inspired by a mix of Tim Herb Alexander's drum groove and Les Claypool's bass pattern from the Primus song, "My Name Is Mud". Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&", the "and" of 2, followed by sixteenth note triplets (counting as: 1 trip let & trip let) on the 3 and on the first "trip" and '"let" of 3. Next, our hi-hats are falling on "1&2&", as well as notes in unison with our bass drum part and an opening on 4. The downbeats are also being accented on the hats. Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on 2 and on the "and' of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is an uber fat backbeat that is broken up between the bass drum, snare, floor tom, and cymbals. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "a" of 2, on 3, and on the "a" of 4. Next, our floor tom is falling on 1 and on the "a" of 3. Moving along to the auxiliary hi-hats, we have notes falling on the "a" of 1 and on the "e" of 3. Next, our ride cymbal is falling on the "and" of 2. Now let's look at the snare, where we have accented notes on 2 and 4, as well as ghost notes on the "e&a" of 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats are providing the groove with a swing by playing all of the upbeats or "and's". As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a tom driven, halftime backbeat with a swing to it, but our hi-hats are being splashed on all of the downbeats. I'm going to break this groove down as a bar of triplets. Looking at our feet first, the hi-hats keeping are keeping a quarter note pulse on all of the downbeats. Meanwhile, our bass drum is falling on 2 and the "let" of 2 and on 4 and the "let" of 4. Moving along to the toms next, our floor tom is falling on 1, 2 and the "let" of 2, on 3, on 4 and on the "let" of 4, while our high tom is falling on 1 and the "let" of 1. Last but not least, our snare drum has an accented note on 3 and then a ghost note on the "let" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and that you're having a great weekend!

After a myriad of technical difficulties thrown my way, today's wake 'n break is finally up! 😓Today's wake 'n break is a boom bap backbeat that has an implied rumba clave being broken up between the bass drum and snare drum. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "a" of 2, the "and" of 3, and on the "a" of 4. Looking at the hi-hats next, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "a" of 2, and then an open note on the "and" of 3. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4, as well as ghost notes on the "e" and "and" of 1. As always, I hope you dig it and that your weekend was a great one!

Well folks, a new week is upon us once again! :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar waltz groove for cowbell that utilizes a stick inside of the bell to play rapid notes. Taking the feet first, we have the traditional waltz ostinato with our bass drum falling on 1 while our hi-hats are chicked on 2 and 3. Looking at the cowbell next, we have notes falling on 1 and 3 in the first bar, and then we have the rapid notes starting on the 2 in the second bar and ending on 3. Last but not least, our cross stick is falling on 2 and 3 in the first bar, as well as on the 2 of the second bar. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is an idea that came about by playing around with the Roseanna shuffle. At first, I was playing the Roseanna shuffle but with a 3/2 rumba clave on the bass drum instead of the 3/2 son clave. Eventually, I broke the whole groove up among the drum and used the first half to voice the first half of the 3/2 rumba, but the second half of the clave isn't played on the bass drum. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "trip" of 2, and on 4 in the first bar, followed by notes on the "trip" of 2 and on the "let" of 3. Moving along to the hi-hats, we have notes falling on 1 and the "let" of 1, on 2 and the "let" of 2, on 3, and on 4 in the first bar, followed by an open note on 4 in the second bar. Next, our snare drum has accented notes on the 3 in each bar, as well as ghost notes on the "trip" of 1 and the "trip" of 2 in the first bar, followed by ghost notes on the "trip" and "let" of 1 in the second bar. Moving along to the high tom, we have notes falling on the "let" of 4 in the first bar, followed by the 1 of the second bar and last but not least, our floor tom is falling on "2 trip let" in the second bar. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday-ay-ay-ay folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a two bar tom groove that is built on top of the baiao foot ostinato and rather than playing on the hi-hats or ride cymbal, we're riding the snare drum instead. Taking the feet first, our bass drum is falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, on 3 and the "a" of 3, and on the "and" of 4. Meanwhile, our hi-hats are being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". Looking at the snare drum next, we have a steady slew of single handed sixteenth notes. Moving along to the high tom, we have notes falling on 2, the "and" of 2, and on 3 in both bars. Last but not least, our floor tom is falling on 4 and the "and" of 4 in the first bar, followed by notes on 1 and 4 in the second bar. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar backbeat with hand to hand sixteenth notes on the hi-hats and a syncopated bass drum part. Taking the hi-hats first, we have a steady slew of sixteenth notes on "1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a" with an open hi-hat on the "and" of 4 in the second bar. Looking at the bass drum next, we have notes falling 1 and the "e" and "a", the "and' and "a" of 2, and on 4 and the "e" of 4 in the first bar, followed by notes on the "and" and "a" of 1, and on 3 and the "e" of 3 in the second bar. Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a mainly linear odd time groove in 7/4. I say it is mainly a linear groove because there are only two notes that are falling in unison. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and 2. Looking at the ride cymbal next, we have two notes falling on 1 and 2. Moving along to our hi-hats next, we have notes falling on the "and" of 1, the "and" of 2, on 4, 5 , 6, and then an open note on 7. Now let's take a look at the high tom, which is falling on "3&" and on the "and" of 5. Next, our floor tom is falling on the "and" of 4 and last but not least, our snare drum is falling on the "and" of 6. As always, I hope you dig it and that you have a great weekend!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break turns the mozambique rhythm into a samba groove. Taking the feet first, we have the traditional samba ostinato with the bass drum falling on each downbeat as well as the "a" of each beat and then our hi-hats are playing all of the upbeats or "and's". Looking at the cowbell next, we have notes falling on "1&", on 2 and the "e" and "a" of 2, the "e" and "and" of 3, and on 4 and the "e" and "a" of 4. Moving along to the snare drum, we have a single accented note on the "and" of 1. Next, our high tom is falling on the "and" and "a" of 2, and on the "and" and "a" of 4, and last but not least, the floor tom is falling on the "a" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay! :) Running a little late but today's wake 'n break is a mainly linear odd time groove in 5/4 and although 5/4 doesn't always seem to have a natural feel to folks, I find that this groove almost feels as if it's in 6/8. I believe this may have something to do with a snare accent that is being played slightly behind the beat. Starting with the bass drum, we have notes falling on 1 and on the "and" of 4. Looking at the high tom next, we have a single note on 1. Now let's look at the snare drum, which has a crescendo starting on the "and" of 1 and ending with two accented notes on "3&", and then our behind the beat accent on the "and" of 5. Moving along to the floor tom, we have a single note on 4 and last but not least, our hi-hat has a single note on 5. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

A new week is upon us once again, folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a 6/8 groove built around the polyrhythm of three against four, with the four being voiced on the bass drum while the three is being voiced on the ride cymbal. This groove is also completely made up of buzz strokes. Starting with the bass drum, we have notes falling on 1, the "and" of 2, on 4, and on the "and" of 5. Next, our ride cymbal is falling on 1, 3, and 5. Moving along to the hi-hats next, we have notes on all of the upbeats. Now let's look at the high tom, where we have notes falling on 2 and on 6 and last but not least, our floor tom is falling on 4. Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a unique boom chick backbeat because it utilizes an elbow lean to bend pitch of the snare drum (the wires are dropped). Taking the feet first, our bass drum is falling on 1 and 3 while our hi-hats are being chicked on 2 and 4. Now let's look at the snare, we have triplets falling on the "trip" and "let" of 1, on 2 and the "let" of 2, the "trip" and "let" of 3, and on 4. Meanwhile the pitch is being bent by leaning the elbow into the head of the snare drum, which raises the pitch of the drum, and then an open tone is played on the "let" of 2, providing us with the lowest pitch on the snare. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a dirty, two bar sixteenth note groove that was inspired by the vocal intro to Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You", which is being voiced on the bass drum in this groove. This break also starts with a pickup on the "and" and "a" of 4 in the second bar. Taking the hi-hats first, we have a steady slew of sixteenth notes on "1e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a" throughout both bars, but we also have an open note on the "e" of 3 in the second bar. Looking at the bass drum next, we have notes falling on 1 and the "and" and "a" of 1, on 2 and the "and" and "a" of 2, and on "3e&" in the first bar, followed by notes on the "e" of 1 and on the "e" of 3 in the second bar. Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a shuffled backbeat for the cowbell. I'm going to break the groove down in into sixteenth note triplets, which I will be counting as "1 trip let & trip let". Starting with the cowbell, we have notes falling on 1, the first "let" of 1, and on the "and" and second "let" of 1, followed by notes on 2, the first "let" of 2, on the "and" and second "let" of 2. We then have notes on 3, the first "let" of 3, and on the "and" and second "let" of 3, followed by a final note on 4. Now let's look at the bass drum, where we have notes falling on 1, the second "let" of 1, and on 4. Next, our snare drum has accented notes on 2 and 4, as well as ghost notes on the first and second "trip" of 1, the second "trip" of 2, and finally on the first and second "trip" of 3. We also have an accented auxiliary hi-hat note in unison with the snare on 4. Last but not least, our hi-hats have some jingle sounds on top of them and are being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

I finally got to sleep in on a Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay, so I'm feeling refreshed. :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar halftime backbeat, with a triplet hi-hat pattern in the first bar followed by a second bar of paradiddle-diddles. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on the 1 in each bar. Next, our snare drum is providing the groove with it's halftime backbeat with accented notes on the 3 in each bar. Last but not least, we have our hi-hats. In the first bar, we have notes falling on "1 trip let", "2 trip let", on the "trip" and "let" of 3, followed by an open note on 4. Finally, we have sixteenth note triplets playing paradiddle-diddles on the hi-hats in the second bar, but with differently played accents. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

It's just another manic Monday-ay-ay-ay folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a two bar groove that almost has a broken baiao/dancehall feel to it. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1 and on 3 and the 'a" of 3 in the first bar. In the second bar, however, the bass drum is falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, on 3 and the "a" of 3, and on the "and" of 4. Looking at our auxiliary hi-hats next, we have notes falling on 1 and 3 in both bars. Moving along to the main set of hi-hats, we have notes falling on the "a" of 1 and the "a" of 3 in both bars. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4 in each bar, with ghost notes on the "e" and "and" of 1 and on the "e" and "a" of 3 in both bars. Today-ay-ay-ay's wake 'n break has a snare oriented second line groove happening on top of the 2/3 rumba clave, which is being played on the bass drum. :) Looking at the bass drum first, we have notes falling on the "and" of 1, on 2, 3 and the "a" of 3, and on the "a" of 4. Next, our hi-hats are being chicked on all of the upbeats or "and's". Last but not least, our snare has some swung sixteenth note action happening with accents falling in unison with the bass drum. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday-ay-ay-ay folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a samba groove in 6/8. Taking the feet first, our bass drum is falling on 1, the "and" of 2, on 3, on the and of 4, on the 5, and on the "and" of 6. Meanwhile, our hi-hats are being chicked on 2, 4, and 6. Moving along to the ride cymbal, we have a steady slew of notes on "1&2&3&4&5&6&". Looking at the high tom next, we have notes falling on 1 and 2. Last but not least, our snare drum is falling on the "and" of 3, the "and" of 4, and the "and" of 5, and on 6. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a shuffle that is broken up among the bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats, ride, and toms. Taking the bass drum first, we have four on the floor (quarter note pulse). Looking at the snare drum next, we have notes falling on 1 and the "let" of 1, on 2 and the "let" of 2, on the "trip" and "let" of 3, and on 4 and the "let" of 4, with accents on 2 and 4. Moving along to the toms, our floor tom is falling on 1 and on the "trip" of 3, while our high tom is falling on 2 and 4. Now let's look at the ride cymbal, where we have notes falling on the "let" of each beat. Last but not least, our hi-hats are keeping a quarter note pulse along with the bass drum. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Thank goodness it's Friday-ay-ay-ay! :) Today's wake 'n break is built around a dance hall inspired bass drum part, although I wouldn't really classify it as a dance hall groove due to the hi-hat part and the behind the beat snare accents. Looking at the bass drum first, we have notes on 1 and the "a" of 1 and on 3 and the "a" of 3. Next, our hi-hats have short 32nd note paradiddle-diddle flurries from 1 to the "a" of 1 and from 3 to the "a" of 3. We also have open hi-hat accents on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes falling on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4, as well as a ghost note on the "e" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and much love! Now go create something!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a 6/4 groove that utilizes hand to foot sixteenth notes between the floor tom and bass drum. Starting with the hi-hats, we have a quarter note pulse on 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, with an open note on the "and" of 2. Looking at the bass drum next, we have notes falling on 1, the "e" and "a" of 4, and on the "e" and "a" of 5. Now let's look at the floor tom, where we have notes falling on 4 and the "and" of 4, on 5 and the "and" of 5, and on 6. Next, our ride cymbal is falling on the "and" of 3 and last but not least, our snare drum has notes falling on 1 (which begins with a ruff) and the "and" of 1, on 2 and the "and" of 2, the "and" of 3, and finally on 6. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a heavily ghosted backbeat that would work perfect in a rock setting. Starting with the bass drum, we have notes falling on 1 and the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, and on 3 and the "a" of 3 in the first bar. In the second bar, the bass drum is falling in the same places as in the first bar except there is an additional note on the "e" of 4. Next, our hi-hats are falling in unison with the bass drum except we have an open note on the "e" of 4 in the second bar. Last but not least, the snare has accented notes on 2 and 4 in both bars, with ghost notes falling between the bass drum and snare drum accents. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Better late than never! :) Today's wake 'n break is a four bar phrase that is built around a tom-to-snare lick with flanged hi-hats. Starting with the hi-hats, we have a steady eighth note pulse being chicked throughout both bars, with flanged notes on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4. We also have additional flanged notes on the "and" of 2, the "and" of 3, and the "and" of 4 in the second bar. Next, our bass drum is falling on 1, the "e" of 2, on 3, and on the "e" of 4 in the first bar, followed by notes on 1, the "e" of 2, on "3e", and on the "e" of 4 in the second bar. Looking at the tom next, we have notes falling on 1 and 3 in the first bar and then on 1 in the second bar. Last but not least, our snare drum has accented notes on the "a" of 1, 2, the "a" of 3, and on 4 in the first bar, followed by notes on the "a" of 1, on 2, and then a flam on 4 in the second bar. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a quasi linear groove, meaning that the groove is mainly linear minus one or two notes falling in unison. It also has a slight hint of guaguanco to it, but it is definitely not a traditional guaguanco by any means. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "and" of 1. Looking at our auxiliary hi-hats next, we have notes falling in unison with the bass drum (these are the only unison notes in the groove). Moving along to our main set of hi-hats, we have notes falling on the "e" and "a" of 1, on 2 and the "and" of 2, on 3 and the "and" of 3, and on 4 and the "e" of 4. Now let's take a look at the toms, where we have our floor tom falling on the "e" of 2 and on the "and" and "a" of 4, while our high tom is falling on the "a" of 2 and on the "a" of 3. Last but not least, our snare drum has a single accented note on the "e" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Happy Humpday-ay-ay-ay folks! 🐪 Today's wake 'n break is a cross stick and snare groove (with the wires dropped) that utilizes both open and closed tones. Looking at the feet first, our bass drum is falling on 1 and 3 while our hi-hats are keeping a quarter note pulse on "1, 2, 3, and 4". Moving along, the snare drum has a bit of a broken triplet feel with closed notes falling on the "trip" and "let" of 1, on "2 trip let", on the "a" of 3, and on the "and" of 4. Meanwhile, we have open tones on the "e" of 3 and on 4. Last but not least, our cross stick is falling on the "trip" of 1, the "let" of 2, the "a" of 3, and on the "and" of 4. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there because we're already halfway through the workweek!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is comprised of flams on a set of de-tuned toms to achieve a dissonant sound for the groove. It is also built on top of the polyrhythm of three against four, with our bass drum voicing the four while the hi-hats are voicing the three on the upbeats. To simplify things, I will break this groove down in 6/8. Taking the feet first, we have our bass drum falling on 1, the "and" of 2, on 4, and on the "and" of 5, while our hi-hats are falling on 2, 4, and 6. Looking at the toms next, we have flams on 1 and on 5. Moving along to the snare drum, we have a single accented note on 3 and last but not least, we have a second set of hi-hats (left loose) falling in unison with the snare. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a cross stick groove in 6/8 and utilizes the splashing technique on my hi-hats to play a flanged note. One of the unique things about this groove is the fact that we are riding the snare drum instead of a cymbal or bell. Looking at the snare drum first, we have a steady slew of notes falling on "1&2&3&4&5&6&". Taking the bass drum next, we have notes falling on 1, 2, the "and" of 3, on 5, and on the "and" of 6. Moving along to the cross stick, we have notes falling on 3, the "and" of 4, and on 6. Last but not least, our hi-hats have a flanged note on 2, followed by chicks on 3, 4, and on the "and" of 5. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Sorry for posting this la-ay-ay-ate in the day! 😬 I had to get on the road this morning, so I didn't have much time to develop/tighten this morning's groove. Taking the bass drum first, we have two notes on "1&". Looking at the hi-hats next, we have notes falling on "1e&", on 2 and the "a" of 2, and on "3e&", and on "4&". Last but not least, our snare drum has an accent on 2 and then an anticipated accent on the "a" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and that your weekend has been going well!

It's Sunday Drumday-ay-ay-ay folks! 🥁 Today's wake 'n break is a two bar groove built around hand to hand sixteenth notes between the hi-hat and snare drum, with the snare drum being mainly ghost notes. Looking at the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&2" in the first bar and then on 1, "2&", the "and" of 3, and on 4 in the second bar. Taking the hi-hats next, we have a steady slew of eighth notes on "1&2&3&4&" throughout both bars with an opening on the "and" of 2 in the second bar. Hey-ey-ey-ey folks! :) Today's wake 'n break is a boom bap beat with a bit of a "pulled out" feel, meaning that the groove almost sounds as if you're pulling the carpet out from underneath the beat. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on "1&" and "3&". Looking at the snare drum next, we have accented notes on 2, the "a" of 2, and on 4, with short rolls on "1&" that lead into notes on the ride cymbal. We also have sixteenth note triplets on the "& trip let" of 2 (counting the triplets as "1 trip let & trip let"). Next, our ride cymbal is falling on "1&" and on 2 with the 2 being accented. Last but not least, our hi-hats are falling on the second "let" of 2 and on 4 with openings on both notes. As always, I hope you dig it and here's to everyone's week starting off on the good foot!

Today's wake 'n break. :) Today's wake 'n break is a four bar soca groove with a sparse hi-hat part in the first two bars and then a busy pattern in the last two bars. Taking the bass drum first, we have four on the floor (1, 2, 3, and 4) throughout all four bars. Looking at the snare drum next, we have accented notes falling on the "a" of 1, the "and" of 2, the "a" of 3, and on the "and" throughout all four bars. We also have ghost notes on the "e" of 1 and the "e" of 3 in the first two bars. Last but not least, we come to our hi-hats. In the first two bars, we have eighth notes on "1&2&3&4&" with openings on the "and" of 2 and on the "and" of 4. In the last two bars, the hi-hats are falling on "1e&", "2e&", 3e&", and "4e&". Today's wake 'n break is a 6/8 groove that utilizes the strainer level on the snare drum to change the pitch/effect from the dropped position to the up position. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1 and the "and" of 2. Next, our hi-hats are playing notes on "1&2&3&" with an opening on the "and" of 3. Last but not least, we have snare notes on "4&5&6&" with the strainer lever starting in the dropped position and finishing in the upright position. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

After wrestling with my computer for my sanity, today's wake 'n break is finally uploaded! 😵Today's wake 'n break is a slightly swung groove that utilizes a cymbal choke to create an abrupt pause in the middle of the groove. Taking the bass drum first, we have notes falling on 1, the "a" of 1, and on the "and" of 2. Next, our ride cymbal has slightly swung sixteenths on "1e&a" and then a choke on 2. Moving along to the snare drum, we have our backbeat being accented on 2 and 4, as well as a short snare roll that falls into the 1. Last but not least, our hi-hats are keeping a quarter note pulse while we have an opening on the "e" of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend!
