I wonder if Vinnie has left Vic Firth. He's been wiped from their website.

Vinnie is one of my favourite drummers, I don't think it can be overstated how how versatile he is and how good his chops are. I had always wanted to see him live and this year I saw the best concert I've ever seen in my life thus far, Jeff Beck with Vinnie on drums, it was like every Christmas and birthday at once! Has anybody else caught Jeff and Vinnie on this tour?

I've seen him live many times since the first time with Zappa.
I caught them one month ago in Vienne, France. That was the first time I saw Jeff Beck ! Great concert ! Quote:

You are fully preaching to the choir my brother! I get it. Nadia was amazing on the Ronnie Scott dvd, I can only imagine live! The dvd made me declare.....this guy, this guy plays guitar like I want to hear it. And as Jeff Beck describes in his dvd interview, Vinnie rips and rolls and always hits the bulls eye on the target (referring to being on time, nailing transitions etc), just all that action and its dead on precise, to me he's on a whole other level than even the best guys out there. He does the impossible with style and grace and an elegance that makes it mind blowing. Vinnie has brought so much joy to my life I should send him a muffin basket or something. Im so glad you went and enjoy it the way I do.....awesome, thanks for sharing. If anything pops into your mind that you want to share, please do. I wont be at this show this weekend as Ill be at Phish fml.

Colaiuta is a great drummer, a legend....but i wonder why, with all the young talented drummers available in the world (especially in the States) Herbie Hancock insists on calling him for his tours.

Perhaps because they are relative contemporaries Herbie trusts in his knowledge and familiarity with a multitude of past and contemporary styles, and has developed a comfort level working together. Colaiuta is a great drummer, a legend, imho is a huge under sell for Vinnie. To me, he can pull off just about any style, make it look easy, and execute on a mind boggling level. He's able rip and hot dog, express any and every musical idea in a way that makes me jump and shout, and then he can do his metric modulation and just make the hardest most complex music seem like a walk in the park. Few guys can legit jazz, pocket funk, slam rock, seal call drum solo, etc etc as proficiently as Vinnie....Id say very few. I gotta check out some of your Deantoni vids man, thanks for posting those and kicking off more Vinnie talk.

I don't think it's a matter of "who fit that better", because Colaiuta is a master in what he does and is capable of everything, but at this point of his career Herbie should be more "mentally elastic".
I read somewhere a few days ago that for this small run of dates in South America this November he brought Justin Brown on drums, a crazy talented guy that certainly deserve such an important spot; hopefully he will be chosen again when Herbie will be on tour with the new album. |

He does use other drummers from time to time, but it seems Vinnie is the most stable band member and there are probably several reasons for that. Vinnie also brin s a crowd and as someone living in a small country where we only get to see such names at a rare jazz festival I can't say I get to be tired of it. As for what Herbie should do, I think he's put in enough time to not having to care about others ideas in that regard. He'd change it if he didn't like it.

Vinnie was on a Rick Beato episode, did a little interview. Very strange set up. You've got one of the best drummers to ever draw breath and you interview him in a hotel room with copious amounts of distractions in the background. Ugh. What is the ultimate in terms of drum album for Vinnie....NEFERTITI....f$%& yeah!!! Anyone wanna discuss?
