The dream team? I think so. Hiromi, Phillips, Jackson.

Originally turned on to this by our member Mad About Drums, I think this is breathtaking stuff, so had to post some here to get a wider audience. Simon's playing is just sublime here, in fact, I'd go as far as to say, it's my favourite performance from him in years. Of course, Anthony Jackson is just a monster, & Hiromi is, well, a genius.

Here's a few clips to give you a flavour of this stunning album. I can't get enough of it!

Wow!!! I'm glad that you like this album... ...I'm a big fan of Simon since the early 80's.

I don't know if you know this, but Simon is involved in another jazz trio project called PSP, which stands for Simon Phillips, Phillipe Saisse (keyboards), Pino Palladino (bass) you should be able to find it on YouTube.

Yes, I know the PSP stuff very well. It's good, great even, but doesn't quite hit the mark for me. This Hiromi trio, however, is a different story. I'm a Jackson fan anyhow. I think he & Simon work so well together, but Hiromi really adds so much to the texture & dynamic, it's awesome!

I'm not a fan of drummers generally, with the exception of SP. I really come from his rock era, & get off completely on his rock performances, but I'm enlightened by his latest ventures.

Anthony Jackson played on both Simon's educational videos "Simon Phillips" and "Simon Phillips Returns" alongside Ray Russell on guitar, that was in the early 90's, It can be boring if you don't like the drumming aspect of it, but the full songs are brilliants

It's a pretty unusual mix. I could easily imagine a jazzier rhythm section with that piano - but Hiromi seemed to be looking for something more muscular. The music is reminding me of ELP's Karnevil 9 2nd Impression but with more advanced musicianship and swooshier production.
Good ob's Pol. although I think that ELP track is a deal more ostentatious. Do rather like "Brain Salad Surgery" though, mostly because it's part of my early listening landscape. To my crude ear, this Hiromi material is so well considered, but with a fair sprinkling of levity. I can't believe how cool her phrasing is, a twist at every junction, & that rhythm section just punches through without ever overriding the solo artist. More muscular than you'd expect? Yes, for sure, but the muscles of a ballerina rather than a boxer.

I didn't like that ELP track as a young un but now I find enjoyable. I also find Hiromi plays 8th note lines in a crisp way like Chick Corea. I'm no expert so I can mostly only comment by comparison.

The muscularity I was talking about comes from Simon P and Anthony J, who are working as a fusion rhythm section. I could easily imagine Hiromi's lines played with a jazz drummer and big bass. She was obviously looking for something different, though.

With you Pol, & I'm glad Hiromi did seek out something with more "spheres". I can hear her playing with a rhythm section you'd expect, and that would be the usual default choice for this style. Such a choice would better feature her playing as a solo act, again, something you'd expect, so hats off to Hiromi for having the guts to feature the trio rather than hog the limelight.
