First Post and a question regarding snares

Hi. I recently joined this forum thinking I can learn a lot from it. I've been playing for about 3 1/2 years and currently have a 100% birch Tama Starclassic (I'll try and post pictures later).

My birthday's coming up soon and I wanted to get a snare drum for my self. Money isn't a big problem but I wasn't hoping to spend a lot. These are what I found so far. Could you let me know if either of these would be worth my time? Thanks in advance.

are you looking for a side snare? or just like the sound of a piccolo? Both of those would make a good side snare but IMO couldn't stand the sound all the time.

I'd be using it as a primary snare, but I also assume that it would be getting use as a secondary. At the moment I'm playing a lot of jazz and bossa nova if it makes a difference.

I guess it depends on if you like the sound or not, in some situations they're great, I don't think it would be a bad idea to get one and experiment. Personally I think you would be happier in the long run with the last one you posted a link to, the Pearl limited, thats the best deal out of the three IMO.

The first tama piccolo is not as nice as the pearl one, so if you're going for a picollo, choose that pearl. However the 3rd one is the best deal of the 3, it's a rare size too, a lucky find.

However none of them are particular versatile. Ludwig Suprphonics can be found used for around $200 if you look hard, and are as versatile as you get with snares.

Your call, any 13" will work nice for bassa, and with a lower tuning probably jazz too.

So if I'm getting a piccolo, I should get the pearl one? Can you recommend any other versatile snares for a decent price?

I have never heard the Tama so I could not tell you for sure, I know the Pearl is good because I have played one, Tama Metalworks snares are versatile and affordable. Pearl Sensitone, Ludwig Black Magic, Mapex MPX, PDP Blackout, what is your price range?

Didn't someone mention Black Panthers?!?!?! well .... now i do.
There's tons of panthers. just try to do a search LOL. - and people love em.
"Mapex Black Panther" to be totally correct.

I realize it's not a lot, but I don't want to have spend more than $150. I'd also want to buy it used if the opportunity presents itself. I'm not exclusively looking for piccolos, they were just the first affordable snares I saw.

These are a few I saw used in your area and can recommend, I have a Pork Pie acrylic just like the third and love it, You cant go wrong with an Acrolite and The 1st has cast hoops.

My choice would go
1 pork pie
2 Acrolite
3 Orange County

First I'd like to thank you for the effort you put into helping me. Which do you think is the most versatile and why do you personally enjoy the porkpie?

Out of those three IMO I believe the Ludwig would be the most versatile for what you want to play, if you ever want to get into rock the depth might not be enough. I like the Pork Pie for looks but it has a damn nice sound to it as well, its loud and cutting, it has great response nice rim shots and well made.
I would suggest go look and play these and others and see which ones you like.

Here is a better pic of mine, post # 701

Thanks for the quick response. I'm still looking around but I'm fairly interested in the Ludwig, what would an appropriate offer be?
