If you could musically have your way, what situation?

Larry

"Uncle Larry"
Myself, I would be in a killer Motown band complete with horns and backing vocalists, a kickin southern rock band, and a wailing blues band.
Of course I would be the leader, and choose the material.

Haha, I had this same ideas for a thread, but using specific situations. I would be ?uestlove, Billy Martin when he's playing with Scofield Medeski and Wood, Brian Blade with Joshua Redman, Jeff "Houseman" Clemens with G. Love & Special Sauce, or the new drummer in Ben Harper's band. Sorry so long, couldn't narrow it down.

So you would be someone else? OK it is a hypothetical question. This thread was meant to shed light on everyones personal aspirations. It's good to keep the target in view.

Oops, sorry then, misinterpritation.
A jazz/funk band with either two swinging guitarists, bass and keys, or sax bass and keys, a rock/blues/funk band, and a "surfer"ish type of rock band.

My ideal musical situation would involve playing experimental music unlike what's ever been heard (at least in the context of one band) with a bunch of versatile people with diverse backgrounds. Everybody would be perfectly level-headed, technically proficient, and willing and able to communicate in a coherent and consise manner. At the same time, these people would also be a passionate, emotianlly driven, creative right-brain psychedelic "out-there" free-thinking, and spiritual bunch.

We would make music that would probably fit comfortably within the rock idiom, maybe even be considered "progressive", but hopefully not because it stays within the confines of that genre, but rather because the music would push the boundaries of the rock envelope with various other influences.

The way I hear the music, there are drastic shifts and swings in mood/style, from distorted heavy metal, to complex technical playing, to ballad-y sections, to dirty funk parts, which might suddenly transform into a balkan dance melody (you know, those that start out reall slow and gradually speed up, and by the end there's people whooping and whistling), with all kinds of atmospheric and ambient sections and "noise" experiments. Supposedly this bunch of diverse and communicative musicians would infuse their own influences. In my head this music shifts around styles and textures based on changing moods, rather than as a technical display itself. Now, ideally these changes would create a variety of musical landscapes that some good lyrics could rest on, emersing the listener in an emotional journey encompassing the diverse musical influences of several creative minds.

You may say I'm a dreamer...

I would be the drummer for Toots and The Maytals.

Any reggae band =( I have such a hard time finding fellow reggae enthusiasts who actually want to play it.

Playing funk or jazz with a big band would be awesome though to.

I'd also like to sit down with another like minded drummer for some duets I think that would be pretty cool

a 3-piece grunge/alt rock/hardcore punk band.

i just like bands with less people lol

our lyrics wouldnt make any sense but we would deliver them in a way that it seemed like they did, so people would come up with halfass explanations for them.

our concerts would basically consist of a lot of jumping around, destroying equipment, and crowd surfing...

A multi-instrumental jam band that plays material from every genre...... like Umphrey's McGee

This would include sucky gigs that you get your equipment stolen too, so be careful what you wish for....

Ideally I'd (once again) have a talented singer/songwriter who would bring me wonderfully inspiring original songs that I could craft drum parts for. Have a unique 3 or 4 man band in this setting that had regular local gigs and the occasional regional tour would be heaven.

I don't need or even desire any "big time" results from music...just the right people, the right music, and the pure joy of playing with equally dedicated musicians with the same passion for music.

It's hard enough to find something so seemingly simple!

Bravo! Such an elegant expression of what we all want...

In a famous rock band with a long-history and dedicated fan base e.g. Pink-Floyd, YES. Moody Blues etc...

In a swinging 1930's-40's dance band e.g. Benny Goodman, Count-Basie, Glenn Miller era perfoming at an exclusive resort or casino.

In a great Symphony Orchestra as a snare-drummer.

PS... I'm not asking too much here am I ?

a band that plays an early rock n' roll sound but completely original and our sound is NEW to people. basically time machine back to the 50's. we get to wear cool matching suits and it's never too hot on stage. drums, bass, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, singer, piano, and saxophone.
