Ear Protection

I practice in my basement. I started with cheap ear plugs and they muffle the drums so bad it sounds like a big mess. So I upgraded to the $20 Hearos. What a difference! Everything sounds the way it should, just at a lower volume.

I then decided to use Direct Sound EX-25 Extreme Isolation Headphones so I could plug them into the iPod. I was disappointed because they muffle everything the same way the cheap ones do. I then realized they are mostly designed to be used as monitors. So looks like I will need a mixer and a mic so that I can plug in the iPod and the mic into the mixer and then use the headphones as the output. Is anyone out there doing something similar? Does it work?
 
I bought the ear plugs from the pharmacy. They were rated at 35db. They muffled the drums too much and I was not sure what I was playing.
I just got a pair of the Vic Firth head phones from the comments on this link. I like them very much. The drums sound lower in timbre, and the cymbals are still recognizable without taking away too much.
The only thing I do not like about the VicFirth head phones is that the cord is too short and is coiled so that it is hard to plug them in without them getting in the way.

No. You're not the only one. I use JVC marshmallow headphones for my iPod and put Silencio gun muffs on top so I don't have to crank the iPod. Works like a ...What?...I can't hear you.

I also find that ipod earbuds underneath gun muffs is a LOT more comfortable than earplugs with a pair of CRANKED studio headphones on top. :)
 
This is one Very Very Important thread !!!

While playing in bands(hard rock) during the 80's & 90's
I Never wore any ear protection....
In 2001, I was having problems not hearing to good in my left ear.
So I eventually went to my doctor, because I thought I had either
water or wax in my ears. He sent me to a specialist and I had
3 hearing tests done and the results showed I have a 60% hearing
Loss in my left ear. Right ear was normal.

Was it my heavy hitting on my 15" Hi-hats - maybe?
Was it my guitarist on my left side - maybe?
I don't have the answer to what caused this Loss...

But I Highly Recommend any Ear Protection at all to EVERYONE!
Whether it's plugs, headphones or cotton - Please Use Something!

I use the vater earplugs, and I put my own Sennheiser HD 202 headphones over that. Thing is, I want an upgrade, but my mom is all "You don't need that". What I don't understand is how she can say that. She's a veteran trombonist, yet she still refuses to let me upgrade, she was even refusing the earplugs at first, but then I begged enough and she got them.
 
I moonlight as a construction worker, so I always have my box of foam in ears, and they have done me well...I can still hear my monitor when we play....and since we are on a tight budget, and can't afford the nice in ears yet...they do the trick :D
