Bass drum micing idea?

I have not bought any mics yet except for a Yamaha subkick, I plan on getting a few mics from my drums but I have a question installing my subkick first. I have seen Russ miller do this with a mounted bass drum he uses on his kit and I was wondering what others opinions were on this. Could I internally mount my subkick inside of my bass drum using the Tom mount already on the bass drum? I don't think I would have any problems installing it, really I just want to know what the sound would be like? Would it still sound alright even though it wouldn't be mounted the traditional way? Here is a picture of Russ millers setup

It challenges my imagination to try to think about how that would possibly work, and possibly provide any benefit over conventional mic'ing. From my POV:

It adds a tremendous amount of mass to the drum.
Is guaranteed to be out of phase with the overheads.
Reduces the volume (and the volume) of the drum.

I'm all for experimentation, but this is one of the rare instances where you'd probably be better off with a UKKO.
