Have you ever done that "hand wave" over a cymbal at a gig?

I have never been in a situation that called for this technique.

I have seen this at two clinics. After hitting the bell on the ride, normally, the drummer cups his hand and moves it in and out over the bell for a wavy sound. Has no real practical use that I saw.

Basically this but normally on the bell.

Oh; I can't see how this would be useful outside of a clinic or a room of drummers... Even the most quiet music would probably mask any change in sound.

I saw someone do that in a clinic, and vowed to never, ever do it myself.

So far so good.

I have been playing since 1971, and this is the first time I have heard about this.
